Abstract

The article examines the concept of "interpretation" of cultural heritage in the context of the 1972 Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. Starting from the notion of "outstanding universal value", the text analyzes how the statement of such value accompanies the inscription of a property on the World Heritage List and guides its protection and management. The author discusses emblematic examples, such as the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp, the Hiroshima Genbaku Dome, and the Meiji Industrial Revolution sites, to illustrate the complexities and controversies of interpretation, especially when painful memories or conflicting historical perspectives are involved. Finally, updated criteria and ethical principles are proposed for an interpretation that respects cultural diversity and aligns with international standards

Professor de Direito Internacional na Universidade de Milano-Bicocca, Itália. Atuou anteriormente nas universidades de Parma, Gênova e Milão. É especialista em Direito do Mar, Direito Ambiental Internacional, Direitos Humanos e Proteção do Patrimônio Cultural. Autor de diversas obras sobre esses temas, integra o Institut de Droit International desde 2023.
