“What rude behavior!” Itineraries, conceptual field, and new possibilities for research on incivility at work

Incivility is related to disrespectful, hostile, and rude behavior among employees in the workplace. This study aims to identify how the conceptual structure of incivility at work is conceived by mapping the itineraries of international scientific production. From a systematic review of the literature developed in the Web of Science, without temporal delimitation, it was possible to present insights and a broader and deeper understanding of this exact field of study. The results revealed that the conceptual structure of the theme is grouped into four research clusters, namely: incivility and moderating variables (focused on individuals' experiences), the relationship of incivility with work variables, instigated and cyber incivility and antecedents, and incivility and its relationship with self-control and anxiety. Furthermore, the antecedents and consequences of incivility were identified, which gave rise to a theoretical model, practices, and human resources policies to mitigate and combat the effects of incivility. Consequently, a research agenda was designed with new opportunities. This review can guide managers and academics in understanding the nature of this behavior and which Human Resources (HR) practices can help mitigate uncivil behavior at work.
