This article addresses the growing importance of foreign subsidiaries as significant sources of knowledge and competitive advantages for Multinational Enterprises (MNEs). The main focus is on Reverse Knowledge Transfer (RKT) from the foreign subsidiary to the MNE headquarters, examining the relevant literature through a semi-systematic literature review. Based on 102 articles collected from 1984 to 2022 in the Web of Science and Scopus databases, the study aims to map clusters using the VOSviewer tool on studies highlighting relevant elements for the RKT implementation. The results reveal valuable insights for MNEs to learn from their foreign subsidiaries, such as local adaptation, technological and innovation capabilities, new management practices, social responsibility and sustainability practices, and knowledge absorption capacity, consolidating market positions in the face of competition. In addition to contributing to the literature on international business, knowledge management, and RKT, the article offers practical and managerial implications. The limitations identified, along with recommendations and a future research agenda, provide a comprehensive and robust overview of the growing role of foreign subsidiaries in the global MNE landscape.
