Abstract

Studies on dual-career families touch on relevant aspects of the work-family relationship for couples who build careers and share a family life. However, there is little research exploring the dynamics of these couples in light of emergency or crisis contexts, particularly from the woman’s perspective. In this sense, this research aimed to understand how women in dual careers experienced the work-family relationship, working from home, in a pandemic scenario. Using a qualitative approach, seven dual-career women
were interviewed during the coronavirus pandemic. The reports revealed two main categories: reflections on the family sphere and
experiences of working from home. In the first category, three elements stood out: the division of household tasks, the external support presence, and the close relationship between family members. There are two elements in the second category: social interaction with work colleagues and adapting schedules and environments. It is concluded that renegotiation represents a decisive factor for women in dual-career, mainly as a way of resisting gender asymmetry. Furthermore, the challenges women working from
home faced when the spheres of home and work overlap indicate that organizations need to rethink the configuration of this type of work, especially for dual-career families. This research contributes to recording memories of this pandemic period for those families and highlighting important issues arising from crisis contexts.
