The rapid and easy access to information through the internet creates challenges regarding its control and management. The perception of freedom may foster the creation and dissemination of false news, a problem faced by individuals and institutions alike. Thus, how can we eradicate false news and opportunistic behaviors in the provision of information? This case seeks to contribute to the development of analytical, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills; to raise students’ awareness of possible threats; to exercise creativity in decision-making and strategy design, thereby guiding them toward responsibility in information handling and the consultation of official sources. The facts presented in the case narrative were inspired by real events at the Federal Institute of Piauí. Although the story is fictional, similar occurrences occasionally take place within the Institution. The information is derived from IFPI, collected through the Directorate of Communication and the institution’s official website. The official IFPI Instagram page also serves as a source of data. The case may be used in undergraduate and postgraduate lato sensu courses in Information Technology, Social Communication, Administration, and Public Management, addressing topics such as institutional image, management, crisis, dissemination (and its tools), and strategic communication.
