The cleft palates are medical-dental-social problems that situate themselves between the third or fourth most frequent congenital defects. In Brazil, data suggest that there are approximately 180.000 fissure patients. This revision study aimed at describing the knowledge on cleft palates, surgical techniques used as means of treatment, as well as the best time for intervention and the expected prognosis. The treatment of complete cleft palate considers the correction of the cleft and the problems associated with it. The treatment begins in a premature age, and it can last for some years, the success not being always guaranteed. Through this study, it is concluded that there are a great number of surgical techniques, which vary in accordance with the professional that executes them, with the patient’s general health state and also with the characteris-tics of each fissure, which together determine the complexity of the case.Downloads
