ABSTRACT
Objective: Suicide attempts are a prelude to death and represent a major public health problem. The study therefore reviews the literature on risk factors, the most commonly used toxic agents and the epidemiological profile of people who have attempted suicide due to exogenous intoxication in Brazil. Methods: An integrative review was carried out on databases accessed through the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE) via the National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health (PubMed), the Virtual Health Library Regional Portal (BVS), the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and Embase between 2012 and 2022, including observational studies of individuals who had attempted suicide aged 13 or over. Results: there was a higher prevalence of attempted suicide among females, young adults, those with associated comorbidities and those with unfavorable quality of life. The most commonly used exogenous toxic agents were drugs, which had a major impact on the patient's life and that of their entire social circle.
