Food and nutrition actions in primary care

Objective: To characterize food and nutrition actions implemented in Primary Health Care (PHC). Method: A quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study, with data collected from professionals at Basic Health Units between July and December 2022, in a municipality in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, Brazil. The characterization of food and nutrition actions was performed using the Evaluation Instrument for Nutritional Care in Primary Health Care. Regarding knowledge about the Dietary Guidelines for the Brazilian Population and its use, knowledge and self-efficacy measurement scales were employed. Absolute and relative frequencies, mean, 95% CI, median, and 25th and 75th percentiles were calculated. Results: 22 health professionals participated in the study, predominantly nurses and unit managers. The absence of nutritionists was identified in all evaluated units, along with limited food and nutritional surveillance practices among the population. Health promotion actions are more focused on physical activity and changes in eating habits, with little or no use of the Dietary Guidelines for the Brazilian Population. Conclusion: The performance of nutritional care actions, with emphasis on the knowledge and use of the Dietary Guidelines for the Brazilian Population, was meager, compromising the quality of health promotion actions and the comprehensiveness of health care. The implementation of multidisciplinary teams, investment in permanent education, and the development of health promotion actions based on the population's demands are necessary.
