This essay presents different theories about the social determination of the health-disease process produced from the second half of the 20th century, highlighting Brazilian authors who had empirical or theoretical contributions to the theme, alongside Latin American, English, and North American. The currents analyzed here are presented under three topics: social production of the health-disease process, psychosocial approach and ecosocial theory. At the end, a brief presentation and comments on the social
determinants model proposed by the WHO commission on social determinants on health are added.
