Abstract

In Brazil, the oil retrieving activities have caused, since its beginning, negative environmental impact, both in its natural and socioeconomic aspects, due to the lack of specific guidelines in the relation between technological and environmental risks in the licensing of such activities. Considering the environment law in force and the needs of its effectiveness, this work brings a brief history of oil activities in Brazil and offers comments regarding the environmental impacts of this process, as well as the new technologies that allow socioeconomical growth and good ecological quality together with the sustainable development.
