Obtaining oregano essential oil and its application as an antimicrobial material

This study aimed to extract and analyze oregano essential oil, evaluating its antimicrobial potential against Staphylococcus aureus. The methodology included hydrodistillation extraction using the Clevenger apparatus and Soxhlet extraction with methanol, the former being the most efficient, resulting in a yield of 1% m/v. FTIR characterized the oil, identifying the key compounds carvacrol and thymol, responsible for their antimicrobial properties. Microbiological tests demonstrated that the essential oil effectively inhibited the growth of S. aureus, with the highest concentration (30 µL) showing superior efficacy to the antibiotic chloramphenicol. The results confirm the effectiveness of oregano essential oil as a promising antimicrobial agent, suggesting its application as a natural alternative to conventional preservatives and pointing out the need for future investigations on its efficacy against other bacterial strains and potential synergies with antibiotics.
