The objective of this research was to historically evaluate the behavior (increase or decrease) of some indicators of selective collection practiced in Brazil, taking as reference the SNIS data from the period between 2011 and 2020. The analyzed data were extracted from the Diagnosis of the Urban Solid Waste Management published annually on official Federal Government websites. 08 indicators were chosen: Door-to-door selective collection coverage rate in relation to the urban population, the Recyclables recovery rate in relation to the amount of household and public waste, Mass recovered per capita, Relation between amounts of selective collection and waste Incidence of paper/cardboard on total material recovered, Incidence of plastic on total material recovered, Incidence of metals on total material recovered, Incidence of glass on total material recovered. It was possible to conclude that selective collection in the country has increased (according to the positive behavior of 06 indicators), but not significantly, that is, without the necessary pace. Probably, many factors contributed to this situation: the low adhesion of the population, lack of advertising campaigns, and the lack of financial resources on the part of city halls, meaning that large volumes of recyclables are still being wasted and thrown in dumps and sanitary landfills.
