Abstract

The procedure for conventional welding of the AISI 4140 steel, due to the martensite formation in the heated affected zone (HAZ), contemplates a postwelding heat treatment (PWHT) to relief the stress and to improve the toughness of this zone. This thermal treatment, sometimes, becomes unfeasible due to some factors such as size of the piece, repair in the field and high cost. The main goals of the technique of the two-layer welding are to avoid the heat treatment and to guarantee good mechanical properties for the welded piece. The results of this work showed that it is possible to eliminate PWHT in the welding of the AISI 4140 steel.
