Abstract

Based on the psychoanalytic perspective, the objective of this longitudinal and qualitative study was to understand mothers’ digital media practices throughout early childhood, before and during Covid-19 pandemic. Participants were 22 mothers who had children aged between 5 and 33 months in the first stage of the research and between 32 and 60 months in the second stage. From a reflexive thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews, it was found that digital media assumed different functions in motherhood. The place of “prosthesis” in the absence of caregivers was expanded during the pandemic, while the place of assistance in childcare tasks was more emphasized in the first stage of the research. No expressive changes were observed in relation to the place of escape in moments of emotional overload. Digital media use was associated with maternal need of adaptation to child development. Early childhood intervention, with attention to the mothers' needs, is one of the practical implications of the study.

PhD and Master's in Psychology from the Graduate Program in Psychology at UFRGS, specialist in psychoanalytic psychotherapy from the Mário Martins University Foundation, and graduated in Psychology from UFRGS. Has professional experience as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, attending children, adolescents, and adults, and as an educational psychologist in municipal and federal public service. Currently a tenured psychologist at UFRGS, working at the Parent-Infant Care Center, an outreach program that is part of the Interdisciplinary Center for Health Research and Care (CIPAS).
