Celso Furtado died on November 20th, 2004. He made comprehensible the underdevelopment phenomenon, declaring that peripherical countries, apart from the capital, are condemned to reinvent the development. A seminar named “Celso Furtado, SUDENE and the Future of Northeast”, occurred on June 8th and 9th, 2000, in Recife, was one of the rare opportunities for discussing a regional question, with basis on the work accomplished by one of the greatest thinkers of our days, reflecting not only his teachings but also its validity in the struggle brought by the changes that mankind faced at the end of the last century. Keywords: SUDENE. Underdevelopment. Updating. Industrialization. Structural poverty.Downloads
