Abstract

Ruptures, violence, human rights violations, devastating losses, drug trafficking, sexual exploitation, offenses, and wandering. The complex reality of the social segregation experienced by thousands of children and adolescents who wander through streets, homes, and institutions is woven from these factors, laying bare a perverse context that strives to erase every trace of humanity from “street boys.” This article arose from a community outreach initiative aimed at providing adolescents experiencing psychological and social vulnerability with a space for collectively exploring their proper names, their appropriation of self, and their territory through an operative group. Grounded in psychoanalytic theory, both the clinical intervention and the writing of this article sought to highlight the psychological functions of proper names and territory in the lives of these children and adolescents. These functions are understood as constitutive of psychological places and spaces of belonging and recognition for subjects of desire, despite the desubjectivation and stigma of exclusion carried by the label “street boys.”

Author Biographies

Paula Cristina Monteiro de Barros, Catholic University of Pernambuco, Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil

She earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Catholic University of Pernambuco (2003); a specialization in Psychoanalytically Oriented Clinical Psychology from Center for Research in Psychoanalysis and Language, in partnership with Unicamp-SP (2006); a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Catholic University of Pernambuco (2009); and a jointly supervised PhD in Clinical Psychology Catholic University of Pernambuco and the Doctorat de Recherche en Psychopathologie et Psychanalyse at Université Paris Diderot/Paris 7 (2015). She has worked in clinical psychology since 2003 and previously worked in social assistance, providing clinical and institutional care to children and adolescents experiencing homelessness and families experiencing social vulnerability, as well as conducting research on these topics. She is currently an assistant professor in the undergraduate and graduate Psychology programs at Catholic University of Pernambuco (UNICAP) and a member of the Fundamental Psychopathology and Psychoanalysis Research Group. She is also a member of National Council for Scientific and Technological Development research group “Psychoanalysis and Interlocutions: Clinical Practice, Politics, and Culture” and of the Center for Youth Studies and Research, affiliated with UNICAP’s Psychology program.

Luis Felipe Resende Moreira, Catholic University of Pernambuco, Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil

Psychologist who graduated from UNICAP in 2024. He is currently pursuing specializations in Psychoanalytic Clinical Practice with Children and Adolescents at ESPE Institute and Psychoanalytic Clinical Practice with Infants at UniFafire.

Elio Valois Abreu Caldas de Sá, School of Government in Public Health of Pernambuco, Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil

He earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from UNICAP in 2023 and currently works as a psychologist at Community of the Little Prophets. He completed a specialization in Clinical Interventions in Psychoanalysis at Faculdade Frassinetti do Recife in 2024 and is currently pursuing a specialization in Lacanian Clinical Practice at ESPE Institute. He has experience in psychology, particularly clinical and social psychology.

Maria Fernanda Gomes Cavalcanti Neves, Catholic University of Pernambuco, Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil

She has experience in psychology, particularly clinical, child, and institutional psychology, as well as research. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology. She completed a postgraduate specialization in Clinical Interventions in Psychoanalysis and is currently pursuing a specialization in Psychoanalysis, Art, and Literature. She has also completed a specialization program in Clinical Practice with Adolescents. Her experience includes volunteering at an institution serving children and adolescents experiencing social vulnerability and at UNICAP’s university psychology clinic. She is a partner psychologist at Duo Institute, where she provides care relating to parenthood, the perinatal period, and childhood.

Maria Luísa Pereira de Oliveira Lima, Frassinetti University Center of Recife, Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil

She earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from UNICAP in 2023. She has experience in psychology, particularly clinical psychology, and is currently pursuing a postgraduate specialization in Psychoanalytic Clinical Practice.

Natália Nóbrega da Cruz Souza, Espe Institute, Londrina, Paraná, Brazil

Psychologist who graduated from UNICAP and whose clinical practice is grounded in psychoanalysis. She has experience providing care to children, adolescents, and adults, with an emphasis on contexts of social vulnerability. She works at the NGO Community of the Little Prophets and maintains a private clinical practice. During an internship at Unimed Recife Hospital, she gained experience in hospital-based oncology care. She completed a postgraduate specialization in Clinical Interventions in Psychoanalysis at UniFafire and is currently pursuing a specialization in Lacanian Clinical Practice at ESPE Institute.

Sandra Maria Nunes Lorenzato, Frassinetti University Center of Recife, Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil

She is completing the PROCIPE Early Intervention Training Program (2025). She pursued a specialization in Clinical Interventions at FAFIRE (2024–2025), earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from UNICAP (2023), completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Business Management at UNICAP (2013), and earned a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations from UNICAP (2008). Since 2021, she has served as volunteer deputy coordinator of the community outreach project Senior Citizen Assistance Service (SAI). From 2021 to 2022, she was a researcher in the Institutional Scientific Initiation Scholarship Program (PIBIC), participating in the research project entitled “Vulnerability and the Social and Health Conditions of Older Adults in Primary Care and Long-Term Care Institutions: A Comparative Study in Brazil, Portugal, and Spain – the Situation in Recife, Pernambuco.” She served as a teaching assistant in Adult and Older Adult Psychology in 2022 and participated in the community outreach project “Me and My Territory: A Clinical Intervention with Children and Adolescents Experiencing Social Vulnerability.”

Teresa Alexandrina Maura da Motta e Albuquerque, Frassinetti University Center of Recife, Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil

Clinical psychologist who graduated from UNICAP in 2024. She is pursuing a postgraduate specialization in Clinical Interventions Using a Psychoanalytic Approach at Paula Frassinetti University Center (UniFAFIRE) in 2025. She completed specializations in Cultural Policies (1997) and Information Management and Technology (2009), both at Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), and in Systemic Couple and Family Therapy (2018) at Esuda School of Human Sciences. She also earned a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from UFPE in 1986.
