Abstract

Brazilian educational inclusion policies have expanded access for historically marginalized groups to public universities, but this entry is accompanied by suffering due to persistent social and institutional barriers. This work aims to describe the experience of art workshop aimed at promoting the mental health of university students at the University of Brasilia, users of the National Student Assistance Policy. 19 young undergraduate students participated, forming four groups with three to seven participants each. Six meetings lasting 1 hour and 40 minutes were held. Artistic activities involving collage, painting, clay work, theater, music, photography and poetry were used to address identities, social support networks, strengths and potential, emotional regulation, and aspirations for the future. The sessions were led by pairs of therapists in training, graduating in Psychology, under the supervision of two professionals experienced in psychotherapeutic interventions. Records of each session were kept and subjected to thematic analysis. The participants' reports highlighted gains with social support, emotional regulation, self-knowledge, and self-esteem. The acceptability of artistic techniques and group management was identified, as well as the cultural relevance of certain procedures. It is concluded that group artistic activities activated emotional and social mechanisms that favor students' mental health.
