The objective of this article is to rescue elements to subsidize a critical reflection about the prevalent model of economic development in our society and the relationships with the environment under the threat that haunts the destiny of human beings, according to Lovelock’saffirmation (2006, p. 20) about the concept of sustainable development: “an adorable idea if we had applied it 200 years ago, when there were 1 billion of people in the world. Now it is too late. There’s no chance for any kind of development. Humankind must regress”. This article presents the evolution of the concept of economic development through the optic of sustainability and the concept of sustainable development. This article interconnects themes like ambientalism, an agglutinator of distinct thoughts about the relationships between society and nature; the environmental movement, that will fund the internalization and dissemination of the concept of sustainable development, and environmental management, approached as practices guided by the concept of sustainable development. Keywords: Development. Sustainable Development. Ambientalism. Environmental management.Downloads
