Abstract

This article is organized around the question Lacan poses in Seminar, Book XVIII: On a Discourse That Might Not Be a Semblance: from where is truth questioned? Drawing on a literature review as its methodological approach, we retrace Lacan’s elaboration of the notion of truth throughout his teaching, which ultimately led him to formulate this question. To this end, we take as our guiding framework the recognition of two main paradigms: the structural anthropological and linguistic paradigm, prominent in the 1950s and 1960s, and the logical-mathematical paradigm, which came to the fore in the 1970s. From the 1950s through the 1960s, truth is linked to the negativity inherent in the movement of desire. In the 1970s, by contrast, it comes to be understood, on the one hand, as a place within the structure of discourse and, on the other, as a half-saying, modeled on the enigma. Along this trajectory, we identify how Lacan situates truth as a problem of language that foregrounds the dimension of enunciation sustained by semblance. Thus, the idea of a discourse that might not be a semblance emerges as a key to questioning truth.
