Abstract

This article seeks to examine the process of medicamentalization in mental health through an exploratory and descriptive research, aiming to address the relationship between medicamentalization and transhumanism, supposedly produced in contemporary times by capitalist discourse. It was constructed through a narrative literature review on the transhuman paradigm, contemporary capitalist ideals, and psychopharmacology. The growing role of psychopharmacology as a primary treatment in mental health suggests a connection with the transhumanist discourse within the demands of capitalist society. This approach allowed for analysis of psychopharmaceuticals as technological tools to achieve the machinic transhuman ideal. The critical analytical work with the articles included by the method indicated the concept of wish-fulfilling medicine as exemplary. Therefore, we present and discuss this practice that sews together the notion of the transhuman individual with clinical practices that offer satisfaction for the "improvement" desires of bodies according to a supposed idealized cultural wish.
