Abstract

Since its early years, psychoanalysis — both theoretically and clinically — has sought to think through human culture and its artistic productions. Within this scope, music has been comparatively understudied relative to other arts. Freud’s avowed dislike of music may have contributed to this gap. This article examines ways of bringing music into the psychoanalytic field. It briefly reviews classic contributions and, above all, stages a dialogue between two contemporary authors from different traditions. On one side is Christopher Bollas, from the British school, with his object-relations approach and, especially, the notion of the transformational object. On the other is Alain Didier-Weill, a French Lacanian author, with his original idea of the Blue Note. Read together, they offer a productive counterpoint around the signifying, content-bearing dimension of verbal discourse — an issue that sets the tone for epistemological and methodological debates that run through the history of psychoanalysis.
