				<title>Resumo</title>
				<p>Este trabalho se dedica a produzir uma crítica sobre a eficácia do amor no laço social de nossa época, especialmente o amor nas versões narcísica e fraterna, fortemente sustentado pelo discurso religioso que, no período entre 2019-2022, fundou-se com uma política de Estado. O problema que norteia a estrutura do texto se revela pela questão: como outras modalidades do amor podem contribuir para o engajamento subjetivo de cada sujeito na interminável tarefa de salvaguardar um laço social plural e não totalitário? A partir de vinhetas clínicas, cinematográficas e literárias, enriquecemos a discussão teórica acerca do tema. </p>

	<body>
		<p>Por que elaborar uma crítica sobre a eficiência do amor para o laço social em uma época tão marcada por discursos de ódio, violência desmedida e desejo de morte do outro? Não seria exatamente a falta do amor o que engendra na nossa sociedade o pior do ser humano? Há diferentes caminhos para abordar o tema do amor no laço social e a via que pretendemos trilhar neste trabalho parte: 1) de uma análise teórica sobre o período presidencial de 2019-2022; e 2) de uma reflexão crítica sobre a crença religiosa de que o amor fraterno se consolida como um recurso social eficiente, sem considerar os impasses desse modo de vinculação para uma relação ética entre sujeitos (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Bachler, 2020</xref>).</p>
		<p>Com frequência, escutamos de alguém que o mundo atual está em crise. Não raro encontramos os especialistas de plantão, aqueles que têm a cura do mundo na ponta da língua, com suas respostas marcadas por reducionismos tão violentos quanto os da crise que dizem querer aplacar. Toda crise nos obriga a recolocar os impasses que marcam uma época através de novas questões, a fim de que esse exercício torne possível rever determinados pressupostos, afinal, “uma crise só se torna um desastre quando respondemos a ela com juízos pré-formados, isto é, preconceitos” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Arendt, 1954/2014</xref>, p. 223). Desse modo, insistir em respostas simplistas, em terceirizar responsabilidades e, neuroticamente, procurar saídas em caminhos já trilhados faz com que provoquemos o aguçamento da crise ao invés de aproveitarmos a oportunidade de reflexão e criação que essa situação nos permite.</p>
		<p>Para tanto, é preciso reconhecer que hoje a sociedade que defende o valor da liberdade e dos princípios democráticos é a mesma que clama por um desejo de dominação, de servidão voluntária (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">La Boétie, 1576/2016</xref>). Isso fica evidente quando observamos, na sociedade ocidental atual, o retorno de discursos fundamentalistas e de movimentos de polarização como uma tentativa de (re)instaurar uma ordem mítica no campo social.</p>
		<p>No Brasil, por exemplo, desde a penúltima eleição presidencial, testemunhamos o inflacionamento do discurso religioso no campo da política (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Binkowski, 2021</xref>), fato que resultou, dentre outras consequências, no fortalecimento de políticas da inimizade (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B34">Mbembe, 2021</xref>), isto é, de políticas que organizam uma sociedade desde uma divisão nós/eles, bem como fomentam a perversa fantasia de hierarquização do humano. Seja através da mensagem que o ex-presidente da república transmitiu após cada pronunciamento oficial: “Brasil acima de tudo, Deus acima de todos”, seja através da “defesa da família” como um valor daquele governo que se dedicou a instaurar um modelo ideal a ser seguido por “todo cidadão brasileiro de bem”, observamos nos últimos anos o que a falta do plural na defesa d’A Família denuncia: uma violência reducionista e segregadora que configura aquela política de governo, na qual se acredita no retorno de velhos moralismos e preconceitos para o tratamento dos impasses sociais da nossa época. Nesse sentido, concordamos com a afirmação de que a fraqueza do Estado e, no caso do Brasil, a cumplicidade do Estado com os movimentos religiosos “deixa muitas aberturas para que esse tipo de discurso seja evocado por grupos que chegam ao poder” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Binkowski et al., 2020</xref>, p. 262).</p>
		<p>O documentário Intervenção - Amor não Quer Dizer Grande Coisa, dirigido por Tales <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">Ab’Sáber, Rubens Rewald e Gustavo Aranda (2017</xref>), demonstra o quão problemático pode ser articular o discurso religioso e o exercício político no governo de um Estado. A produção é composta por vários vídeos nos quais é possível ver e ouvir o negacionismo, a paranoia e o culto fervoroso dos indivíduos da extrema-direita brasileira que se manifestaram contra o governo atuante, no período entre 2015 e 2016. Os discursos de ódio que testemunhamos nesse documentário evidenciam, através de ofensas e ameaças, a precariedade da espécie humana ante o desafio de sustentar um mundo sem que desejemos ofender ou matar uns aos outros.</p>
		<p>Dentre esses discursos, alguns produzem ressonâncias até os dias de hoje, como, por exemplo, aquele que venera a intervenção militar, aquele que resiste à legalização do aborto, e, ainda, aquele que crê que nenhum ato a serviço do Senhor pode ser chamado de pecado, como observado durante o aconselhamento pastoral retratado no filme Divino Amor do cineasta Gabriel <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B32">Mascaro (2019</xref>): “Esta frase justifica em si todo tipo de absurdo. Vale mentir pela causa do Senhor; vale xingar (...) e por último, vale matar pela causa do Senhor. A escatologia teológica que o filme sugere é a parte mais triste pra mim” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B23">Gonçalves, 2019</xref>, p. 9).</p>
		<p>Sabemos, desde a psicanálise, que a vida psíquica e social da espécie humana tem como princípio um conflito irresolúvel entre os interesses do Eu e os interesses do grupo social (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Freud, 1912-1913/2012</xref>). Nesse jogo de forças que compõem a constituição de um sujeito, operam mecanismos de dominação e sujeição, sentimentos de amor e ódio, de modo que, ao mesmo tempo em que almejamos a vontade de potência (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Checchia, 2020</xref>), facilmente nos conformamos em um lugar de sujeição. A manifestação desses fenômenos também pode ser encontrada na relação que muitos sujeitos estabelecem com líderes e ideias religiosas (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud, 1921/2011</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">1927/2014</xref>), o que reforça a tese recuperada de <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Hirt (2007</xref>): “tanto a psicanálise como a religião se ocupam do mesmo espaço da vida psíquica, que é aquele deixado aberto pelo objeto que está ausente” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Binkowski, 2021</xref>, p. 41).</p>
		<p>Em vista dessas considerações, nas páginas seguintes atentaremos para: 1) os aportes teórico-clínicos de que a psicanálise dispõe para analisar esse jogo de forças que marca a vida psíquica e social da espécie humana; 2) a coisa religiosa e a função que ela desempenha no psiquismo; e 3) o problema da crença religiosa no amor fraterno, como um recurso social eficiente para uma relação ética entre sujeitos, a fim de que nos seja possível ensejar saídas para o problema em questão neste trabalho. Afinal: como outras modalidades do amor podem contribuir para o engajamento subjetivo de cada sujeito na interminável tarefa de salvaguardar um laço social plural e não totalitário?</p>
		<sec>
			<title>Constituição do sujeito e o Social em Freud</title>
			<p>A psicanálise dispõe de uma teoria sobre a constituição do sujeito, isto é, a constituição da vida psíquica no humano, e esse recurso a diferencia de outras áreas do conhecimento, principalmente por não compreender o nosso funcionamento a partir de uma racionalidade centrada na consciência. Poucos anos após a publicação de A Interpretação dos Sonhos, em 1900, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Freud (1911/2010a)</xref> publicou o que ele formulou como os dois princípios que regem o funcionamento da vida psíquica: o princípio da realidade e o princípio do prazer. Tal vida, de acordo com Freud, tem como base um conflito que lhe é estrutural e irresolúvel. Estrutural, porque dado que a realidade das exigências de um conjunto social por vezes não permite a satisfação dos impulsos do Eu na sua busca por prazer (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Freud, 1912-1913/2012</xref>). E irresolúvel, pois para alcançar a constante homeostase na vida psíquica equivaleria à morte dela (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Freud, 1930/2010c</xref>), ou seja, a morte psíquica. Portanto, estar vivo tem a ver com uma espécie de gestão das tensões e do desamparo que esse conflito produz em cada sujeito.</p>
			<p>Quando Freud reconhece a existência do inconsciente e a incidência desse conflito estrutural sobre o sujeito e os fenômenos sociais, ele acaba por incorrer no que hoje podemos afirmar de que o indivíduo, por uma ótica da psicanálise, não existe, o que significa dizer que nosso psiquismo não pode ser caracterizado como indivisível. Não somos uma totalidade, pois a estrutura é, radicalmente: 1) uma cisão entre inconsciente e consciente; e 2) um conflito caracterizado pelo jogo de forças entre as demandas da vida social e as exigências pulsionais do Eu. Essa desconstrução da noção de indivíduo também pode ser observada na obra freudiana, quando ele afirma a impossibilidade de atingirmos uma condição de completude (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Freud, 1930/2010c</xref>); em outras palavras, que somos marcados pela presença de uma eterna ausência, uma falta que rompe com um imaginário de indivíduo inteiro e autônomo. Trata-se de um fato psíquico que, apesar do mal-estar que provoca, é o que nos permite um movimento em direção à vida, com seus estados de tensão e alívio, polissemia, continuidades e descontinuidades.</p>
			<p>Na condição de sujeitos cindidos e submetidos a todas as consequências que essa cisão resulta na vida de cada sujeito, Freud não pôde deixar de tecer considerações acerca do impacto das suas descobertas na origem e configuração de uma organização social. Em Totem e Tabu, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Freud (1912-1913/2012</xref>) narra sobre um parricídio, o assassinato do Pai da horda primeva, morte que marcou uma possibilidade de organização social não referida ao poder e aos caprichos de um tirano. Vinculados por este crime, aos irmãos - todos os homens que não ocupavam o lugar de exceção do Pai -, foi possível uma vida em conjunto, sem que os desejos do Um prevalecessem sobre a vontade dos demais. A construção do totem, que tinha como finalidade manter vivo o registro da história do grupo, consagrava a eterna lembrança da união dos irmãos para a realização do crime, ato que instaurou interditos para os próprios impulsos. Assim, por mais que alguém desejasse ascender ao lugar de poder antes ocupado pelo Pai, para que uma vida livre da tirania fosse possível a todos, era necessário o engajamento de cada um na tarefa de manter esse lugar de exceção vazio. </p>
			<p>Para além do parricídio, Freud também dá notícias de que há numerosas coincidências entre o que ele chama de psicologia dos povos da natureza e psicologia dos neuróticos, posto que ele considera o mito da horda primeva como uma narrativa que “aborda a origem da religião e da moralidade” no fundamento de uma sociedade (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Freud, 1912-1913/2012</xref>, p. 17). Algumas das semelhanças que podemos observar entre povos nomeados primitivos e povos nomeados civilizados são, por exemplo, as limitações impostas aos impulsos sexuais, a severa punição para aqueles que violam um tabu e a adoração de entidades superiores, princípios que organizaram o sistema do totemismo e que também organizam o sistema religioso. </p>
			<p>Essas considerações freudianas permitem afirmar que a passagem da horda primeva à ordem social não indica a superioridade da segunda sobre a primeira, leitura que por vezes pode ser feita desde uma perspectiva desenvolvimentista da situação, na qual a estrutura que vem depois se apresenta como mais evoluída que aquela que a antecedeu. Isso nos interessa porque o que está em jogo entre as culturas não tem a ver com qual seria mais superior que a outra, e sim de que, independente dos avanços tecnológicos e progressos científicos, toda cultura organiza o laço social a partir da eleição de tabus, sendo que o que varia entre as culturas, para além dos hábitos e costumes que a caracterizam, é aquilo que se considera como interditado:</p>
			<disp-quote>
				<p>Wundt afirma, portanto, que o tabu é a expressão e derivação da crença dos povos primitivos em poderes demoníacos. Mais tarde libertou-se dessa raiz e continuou sendo um poder simplesmente porque o era, devido a uma espécie de obstinação psíquica; assim tornou-se a raiz de nossos mandamentos morais e nossas leis (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Freud, 1912-1913/2012</xref>, p. 51).</p>
			</disp-quote>
			<p>Nos é possível compreender essa obstinação psíquica à qual Freud se refere como uma necessidade de apego do sujeito cindido a algo que lhe forneça limites para lidar com esse jogo de forças que marca a vida psíquica e social da espécie humana e, ainda, sentidos para suportar o desamparo próprio da nossa condição de sujeitos incompletos. Nesse sentido, o mal-estar, que estrutura a vida psíquica e a vida social, configura-se como um invariante histórico, sendo que o que varia historicamente são as formas que inventamos para controlar nossas pulsões e administrar nosso desamparo. Em outras palavras, somos psiquicamente vulneráveis a incorrer na busca por um soberano capaz de nos punir e nos amar. </p>
			<p>Em Psicologia das Massas e Análise do Eu, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud (1921/2011)</xref>, valendo-se das considerações sobre a alma coletiva descritas por Le Bon, retoma o que o polímata francês escreve acerca do que é uma massa psicológica e de quais são seus efeitos no psiquismo do indivíduo. Para Le Bon, a massa psicológica se constitui a partir da união de diferentes partes; essa união produz a formação de uma totalidade composta pela soma das partes, o que resulta no surgimento de um novo ser, sendo este dotado de características diferentes daquelas apresentadas isoladamente por cada parte que se integrou ao todo. O efeito imediato dessa união na vida psíquica é a constatação do desaparecimento das particularidades de um sujeito quando se integra ao todo, apagamento que intensifica a afetividade e diminui consideravelmente a capacidade intelectual dele. Assim, no fenômeno da massa psíquica, “o heterogêneo submerge no homogêneo” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud, 1921/2011</xref>, p. 20), isto é, o sujeito fica submetido a um funcionamento que resulta em grande parte no apagamento das diferenças. </p>
			<p>Ocorre que essa submissão não é sem um ganho de prazer, na medida em que a massa psicológica “não tolera qualquer demora entre o seu desejo e a realização dele. Tem o sentimento da onipotência; [e] a noção do impossível desaparece” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud, 1921/2011</xref>, p. 25). Ou ainda, uma perda de desprazer para o sujeito, dado que o líder, reconhecido por sustentar um semblante de não estar submetido ao desamparo fundamental, condição que faz com que ocupe o lugar de exceção, funciona como fiador dos sentidos que aplacam a angústia do conflito que nos constitui. Nessa modalidade de comunhão social, qualquer semelhança com a organização da horda primeva não é mera coincidência, posto que o líder se torna “um substituto paterno” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud, 1921/2011</xref>, p. 47). O anseio pela providência de um grande Pai corresponde ao tamanho da necessidade de proteção ante a impotência humana e a defesa contra o desamparo (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Freud, 1927/2014</xref>). </p>
			<p>Ainda nesse ensaio, Freud refere que a Igreja, com a comunidade dos crentes, e o Exército, com as forças armadas, se configuram como duas “massas bastante organizadas, duradouras e artificiais” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud, 1921/2011</xref>, p. 46) na história do mundo humano. A título de exemplo, podemos observar as estatísticas e estimativas acerca do número de adultos que se identificam com alguma religião. De acordo com o Censo de 2010, 86,8% do Brasil se identifica como cristão e há um progressivo aumento do número de evangélicos, de modo que nos últimos 30 anos, considerando os últimos três Censos - 1991, 2000 e 2010 -, o número de evangélicos cresceu 61% no Brasil (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Gaier, 2024</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B26">Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística [IBGE], 2010</xref>). O Censo de 2022 ainda não contabilizou os dados dessa categoria de análise, contudo, não faltam reportagens apontando para o aumento do número de evangélicos na população brasileira (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">Capomaccio, 2023</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">CartaCapital, 2024</xref>).</p>
			<p>Igrejas, agrupamentos religiosos e o Exército são massas artificiais porque “uma certa coação externa é empregada para evitar sua dissolução e impedir mudanças na sua estrutura” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud, 1921/2011</xref>, p. 46). Compreende-se por coação externa uma construção ficcional, de caráter ilusório, à qual as massas não podem renunciar, pois o preço a ser pago seria a própria dissolução. Seguindo essa lógica, Freud observa tamanha semelhança que existe entre o funcionamento da massa psicológica e a psicologia das neuroses ao considerar o predomínio da vida da fantasia em ambos os casos:</p>
			<disp-quote>
				<p>Descobrimos que o que vale para os neuróticos não é a realidade objetiva comum, mas a realidade psíquica. Um sintoma histérico se baseia na fantasia, em vez de na repetição da vivência real, a consciência de culpa da neurose obsessiva, no fato de uma má intenção que jamais se realizou. Como no sonho e na hipnose, na atividade anímica da massa a prova da realidade recua, ante a força dos desejos investidos de afeto (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud, 1921/2011</xref>, p. 29).</p>
			</disp-quote>
			<p>Mas qual é o afeto ao qual Freud se refere para justificar a renúncia da realidade por parte de uma comunidade de sujeitos em prol da homogeneização do humano e de uma ilusão que sustenta a existência de uma figura onipotente? Trata-se exatamente do amor. No percurso clínico percorrido por Freud para a elaboração da teoria e técnica psicanalítica, uma das representações do amor é o que ele nomeou como libido. Para a psicanálise, o conceito de libido representa a existência de uma grande quantidade de energia que mobiliza os vetores da pulsão na direção de “tudo aquilo que pode ser abrangido pela palavra ‘amor’” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud, 1921/2011</xref>, p. 43). Freud afirma que essa energia é “proveniente da teoria da afetividade” <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud, 1921/2011</xref>, p. 43) e que, por um lado, ela permite ao sujeito amar a si mesmo; por outro, permite que ele ame o outro - consideração que fez com que Freud formulasse a hipótese de que as relações de amor “constituem também a essência da alma coletiva” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud, 1921/2011</xref>, p. 45). Com essa afirmação, Freud considera que, para além do afeto amoroso ser a força que impele a união de uma comunidade que se caracteriza como massa psicológica, a homogeneização do sujeito se justifica “por amor a eles” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud, 1921/2011</xref>, p. 45), ou ainda, pelo amor deles, desses outros e desse Outro que compõem a (com)unidade.</p>
			<p>A partir dessas considerações, alguns questionamentos se fazem importantes com relação ao desafio que toda sociedade tem ante a tarefa de sustentar um mundo sem que matemos uns aos outros. Se regozijar-se do reconhecimento e do amor do outro passa pelo apagamento da própria diferença, ou seja, pela necessidade de estar sempre de acordo com a massa e de modo algum colocar-se em oposição ao que mantém a massa coesa, como não incorrer na segregação dos que resistem ao apagamento da singularidade e na intolerância ao outro que não corresponde à minha imagem e semelhança? E, ainda, na medida em que a existência da alteridade não fica subordinada à autoridade do soberano, e a existência do outro denuncia e fragiliza a ilusão que fomenta o afeto amoroso da fraternidade, quais recursos são necessários para que relações éticas entre sujeitos possam existir sem que haja a necessidade de circunscrevê-las em nome desse amor? </p>

			<title>Uma nova época com velhas respostas para as mesmas questões</title>
			<p>Por muito tempo na história a Igreja foi reconhecida como uma das principais instituições do processo civilizador, ao funcionar como um instrumento regulador das subjetividades e do campo social. Ela instaurou seu lugar no mundo desde um discurso específico, encarregou-se da missão de amparar os humanos ante a morte, de direcioná-los para a elevação espiritual e para o amor de Deus, bem como de protegê-los das forças internas e externas que os conduzem aos hábitos e prazeres mundanos.</p>
			<p>O discurso religioso, compreendido como uma racionalidade moral, fábrica de sentidos para o humano (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Freud, 1927/2014</xref>), caracteriza-se por estabelecer o que é o bem e o que é o mal. Trata-se de um discurso que constrói uma visão universal de mundo e de ser, modelo historicamente fomentado pelo ideal do homem branco europeu, como foi o caso da Igreja Católica Apostólica Romana. Enquanto um local de comunhão de pessoas que defendem e pregam os mesmos ideais, as igrejas fomentam a união de comunidades no mundo inteiro, todas elas reguladas por meio dos princípios que os líderes dessa instituição estabelecem como bússola do caminho para a correta formação do mundo e do ser humano. </p>
			<p>No entanto, ao reconhecermos o fato de que a história do mundo humano é bem mais antiga que o surgimento da Igreja Católica, retomando o exemplo do parágrafo anterior, não podemos negar que foram e ainda são excluídos dessas comunidades religiosas, unidas pelo amor em Cristo, todos aqueles que não correspondem ao ideal ao qual os irmãos encontram-se identificados. </p>
			<p>O problema maior não se encontra essencialmente na não integração do outro ao grupo ou à instituição religiosa, mas na histórica fixação desses outros no lugar de bárbaros e desviantes por resistirem a nortear suas vidas desde um modelo preestabelecido por um Outro, fixações que induzem determinadas formas de olhar e agir sobre o outro diferente. Por isso, a laicização do Estado é tão importante para a organização civil do mesmo, posto que um Estado laico é formado por uma sociedade capaz de se liberar “de toda a influência de um sistema religioso sobre sua organização civil, política e jurídica” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Binkowski et al., 2018</xref>, p. 112).</p>
			<p>Exemplos de extermínios resultantes da fusão entre experiência de governo e sistema religioso foram os casos das perseguições e assassinatos em nome da Inquisição, e da catequização dos escravizados em nome da conquista e do progresso civilizatório na América. Nessas ocasiões, se o destino do bárbaro não fosse a morte, restava-lhe, como forma de manter-se vivo, assujeitar-se a um processo de homogeneização e docilidade, a fim de que pudesse ser facilmente governado sem que perturbasse a ordem preestabelecida pelo tribunal eclesiástico ou pelos escravocratas.</p>
			<p>Nesse sentido, a civilização pode ser caracterizada como um enorme esforço, por parte das massas que defendiam o progresso através do processo de colonização do outro, de rechaçar a pluralidade das diferentes culturas que configuravam o mundo humano, e assim fizeram ao não abdicarem da tentativa de instaurar um Pai, de inflacionar um sentido único para a existência do sujeito no mundo e de capitalizar uma sociedade a partir da divisão nós/eles. São graves as consequências para a vida daqueles que não sucumbem à identidade massificada que aspira invisibilizar todas as outras formas de ser e se relacionar no mundo. Essas consequências provocadas pela massa psicológica se exprimem através da frase freudiana ao sinalizar que “na cegueira do amor, o indivíduo pode se tornar, sem remorsos, um criminoso” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud, 1921/2011</xref>, p. 72).</p>
			<p>Sabemos, desde as formulações de <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Lacan (1985</xref>), que um discurso é aquilo que determina uma certa forma de laço social, isto é, que os modos como as vontades, interditos e os critérios para qualificar ou desqualificar modos de ser e existir se organizam no interior de uma sociedade com base em uma arquitetura simbólica que toma valor de verdade:</p>
			<disp-quote>
				<p>O discurso é uma estrutura que se encontra fundada na própria lógica de funcionamento da linguagem e de seus efeitos sobre a realidade. Está, ademais, organizado de tal modo que tem, como consequência, o estabelecimento de formas históricas de vínculo social. Dessa maneira, o discurso não é concebido como uma “Realidade primeira a ser interpretada em seu sentido”, mas é o efeito da combinatória significante sobre o mundo (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B36">Rabinovich, 2001</xref>, p. 2).</p>
			</disp-quote>
			<disp-quote>
				<p>Isso significa que nele há uma prevalência e uma anterioridade dos lugares e das suas regras de articulação sobre os destinos dos modos de enlaçamento entre os seres falantes (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Couto et al., 2018</xref>, p. 95).</p>
			</disp-quote>
			<p>Nesse sentido, compreende-se o laço social enquanto uma forma de fazer vínculo com o outro a partir de um discurso comum ao qual nos sentimos pertencentes, mas também ao qual nos alienamos, pois nossa forma de olhar e de ir em direção ao outro fica mediada por essa operação linguageira que predetermina lugares e regras. É nessa condição que, ante o olhar dos líderes referenciados ao discurso religioso e seus discípulos, a diferença por vezes representa uma grande ameaça e ofensa ao sujeito religioso, na medida em que há, nessa gramática referida aos mandamentos instituintes da Igreja, uma inscrição histórica de que a diferença é entendida como uma falha perigosa, um erro a ser consertado.</p>
			<p>O ódio e a intolerância direcionados àqueles que sustentam singularidades e demarcam diferenças são a revelação em ato do medo do desvelamento dessa fantasia: a que encobre a incompletude do sujeito cindido - fantasia que, há séculos, mobiliza as massas religiosas. Não se trata aqui de depreciar o valor psíquico da fantasia, que sabemos, desde a noção psicanalítica desse termo, que se trata de um operador fundamental na vida psíquica. No entanto, criticamos aqui o retorno, em uma nova época, das velhas respostas de cunho fundamentalista para uma mesma questão: como saber-fazer com o desamparo e a diferença, elementos que radicalmente inscrevem a humanidade no ser?</p>
			<p>De acordo com <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Binkowski (2021</xref>), a “coisa religiosa” aparece como o objeto prometido para obturar o desamparo fundamental no sujeito cindido, livrando-o das angústias do conflito interno e da falta de sentido. A partir do autor, podemos considerar que há no sujeito religioso, compreendido aqui como o indivíduo que não consegue se dividir da massa, uma espécie de demissão no exercício psíquico de se haver com a sua condição incompleta, na medida em que insiste antes em uma verdade forjada por um Outro ao invés do encontro com a sua verdade-faltante. Ausência que, quando é reconhecida, permite ao Eu “se produzir enquanto um sujeito a partir da diferença” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Binkowski, 2021</xref>, p. 41).</p>
			<p>Em termos de constituição psíquica, no texto Introdução ao Narcisismo, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Freud (1914/2010b</xref>) nos advertiu do necessário trabalho psíquico de separação do desejo do Outro materno para que o Eu, enquanto instância capaz de realizar uma projeção psíquica do próprio corpo, possa advir. Diferenciar-se, portanto, desse primeiro Outro se torna um trabalho psíquico necessário, ao passo que, quando o sujeito abdica dessa tarefa, impasses constitucionais aparecem. Contudo, para além do que podemos observar acerca desse trabalho psíquico, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Freud (1914/2010b)</xref> também tece considerações que nos permite nomear uma modalidade de amor que podemos chamar de amor narcísico. Trata-se de um amor direcionado ao igual, àquele que corresponde à minha imagem e semelhança, tal qual a simbiótica relação inicial da mãe com seu bebê, e que consideramos como a versão do amor mais comum no laço social da nossa época (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Jorge, 2019</xref>).</p>
			<p>Através do amor narcísico, assim como da coisa religiosa, buscamos encontrar uma completude que promete nos livrar da nossa condição de sujeitos cindidos, bem como do encontro não todo com o outro. Caracterizado como um amor que só considera o registro do imaginário, no qual o sentido único e fechado se torna possível, a dinâmica do amor narcísico acontece na seguinte lógica:</p>
			<disp-quote>
				<p>Se amo uma pessoa, ela tem de merecer meu amor de alguma maneira. (…) Ela merecerá meu amor, se for de tal modo semelhante a mim, em aspectos importantes, que eu me possa amar nela; merecê-lo-á também, se for de tal modo mais perfeita do que eu, que nela eu possa amar meu ideal de eu. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Freud, 1930/2010c</xref>, p. 59)</p>
			</disp-quote>
			<p>Breves vinhetas clínicas colhidas por meio da escuta no consultório exemplificam a acidez que é lidar com essa forma de amor. Um jovem homem, testemunha de Jeová, que já fora banido da sua congregação por apresentar um determinado vício que é repudiado pelos princípios do grupo se percebe, após conseguir retornar à fraternidade, passar por repetidos momentos de exclusão, decorrente da preocupação dos membros-irmãos com relação às más influências que ele poderia causar, por apresentar comportamentos reconhecidos como mundanos. Ao ser interpelado em análise sobre o fato de que o pedido para que ele se distancie chega sempre de pessoas que são testemunhas de Jeová, o jovem silencia e surpreso refere que com as pessoas de fora da congregação nunca houve problemas com o seu jeito de ser, nem com o fato de já ter se divorciado. Outra situação comum que chega ao consultório é a condição de mulheres testemunhas de Jeová que não se separam do cônjuge por receio de serem extirpadas do grupo, e, ainda, que se culpam por não estarem exercendo com seu marido, bêbado, os “deveres de uma mulher para com o homem”. Não raro, essa fala vem acompanhada de um desejo de que o marido realizasse o adultério para que lhes fosse possível sair dessa condição, sem manchar a própria imagem ante o grupo.</p>
			<p>Ressaltamos novamente que o encontro com a coisa religiosa, com o sentido único, nem sempre é totalmente negativo, pois se trata de um recurso apaziguador da angústia ao fazer o real adquirir sentido para aquele que ama (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Jorge, 2019</xref>). No entanto, a ilusão produzida pelos discursos que se estruturam desde o amor narcísico, além de cobrar um preço particular, também não ocorre sem um preço cultural a pagar:</p>
			<p>Esse patrimônio de concepções religiosas nos é geralmente apresentado como revelação divina. Mas isso mesmo já é parte do sistema religioso, que ignora completamente o que se sabe do desenvolvimento histórico dessas ideias e de suas diferenças em épocas e culturas diversas (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Freud, 1927/2014</xref>).</p>
			<p>No mundo ocidental, a gestão do discurso religioso diante do desamparo fundamental e o mal-estar da diferença ocorre por meio do monoteísmo:</p>
			<disp-quote>
				<p>O monoteísmo, pensado pela psicanálise desde Freud e com Lacan, dentre outros psicanalistas, apresenta uma história de violências, de apagamentos e de subversões. Afinal, o que o monoteísmo instaura (...) é um grande sistema de filiação, de aliança e de reconhecimento no qual os deuses antigos passam a ser demônios, e onde a deidade se mantém, quase, sempre, fora do registro da imagem, da língua, do sensorial (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Binkowski, 2021</xref>, p. 41).</p>
			</disp-quote>
			<p>A psicanálise sustenta que essa ilusão não pode ser considerada um erro, posto que em sua motivação prevalece a realização de desejo, mas também não podemos deixar de considerar a aproximação que a crença religiosa tem com o delírio psiquiátrico (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Freud, 1927/2014</xref>), principalmente pela função de reparação que tende a assumir com a realidade da condição humana e do mundo. O fortalecimento do monoteísmo, isto é, da validação e valorização de uma única divindade, resulta em vários radicalismos, a ponto de tornar a religião “um elemento bélico, de anulação de toda negociação da diferença” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Binkowski, 2021</xref>, p. 42). Essa tentativa grosseira de reparar o mundo desde o apagamento ou segregação da diferença, quando incorporada por uma política de Estado, recai sobre a sociedade através dos imperativos mais mortíferos, estabelecendo, por exemplo, quais vidas devem ser amparadas pelo Estado e quais não, quais são as vidas que podem/devem ser mortas e quais não (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">Levine, 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B33">Mbembe, 2018</xref>).</p>
			<p>Nesse sentido, mesmo reconhecendo o valor das concepções religiosas para a vida psíquica, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Freud (1927/2014)</xref> adverte que o ser humano é capaz de prescindir do consolo da ilusão religiosa, criticando a ideia de que o ser humano não suportaria o peso da vida e da hostilidade da realidade sem depender da fé em Deus:</p>
			<disp-quote>
				<p>Já é alguma coisa quando alguém sabe que pode contar apenas com as próprias forças; então aprende a usá-las corretamente. E o ser humano não é inteiramente sem recursos, desde os tempos do Dilúvio sua ciência lhe ensinou muita coisa, e incrementará mais ainda o seu poder. Quanto às inevitabilidades do destino, contra as quais não existe remédio, ele aprenderá a suportá-las com resignação. De que lhe serve a miragem de uma grande fazenda na Lua, cuja colheita ninguém jamais viu? (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Freud, 1927/2014</xref>).</p>
			</disp-quote>
			<p>Outro breve recorte do que as narrativas que aparecem no consultório nos revelam acerca da nossa época cabe nesse momento. Certa vez tive a oportunidade de escutar os conflitos e as preocupações de um menino de nove anos que sofria com dois modos bem divergentes de condição econômica e de criação que recebia da família materna e da família paterna, esta última, comprometida com os valores cristãos e economicamente estável, já a primeira, uma família que vive em circunstâncias de vulnerabilidade social. Durante um atendimento, ele se pôs a falar que, na ocasião de uma aula da qual participava no colégio adventista que frequentava, a professora o colocou para fora da sala por se sentir desrespeitada pelo comentário que ele havia feito. Curiosa, perguntei ao paciente acerca do comentário feito, e ele se pôs a narrar que a professora estava contando que Jesus sempre olha e cuida de todos que estão na Terra, ao passo que esse menino, afetado pelas revoltas das contradições que percebe nos adultos, e, ainda, das contradições que vive entre esses dois mundos familiares tão diferentes, responde: “a Terra é muito grande e cheia de gente para que Jesus consiga cuidar de todo mundo”. Descrente naquele momento e, num rompante de indignação diante do que ele já percebe da verdade do mundo, a criança, como muitas vezes faz, reagiu ao adulto furando a sua fantasia. Na ocasião, ao ser interrogada pela criança, a professora se viu em apuros com o escancaramento da verdade-faltante e, ao não suportar isso, reagiu solicitando que o pequeno delator saísse da sala de aula.</p>

			<title>Fraternidade: uma outra versão do amor narcísico</title>
			<p>
				<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Bachler (2020</xref>) tece considerações importantes sobre as ambiguidades da fraternidade. Na tentativa de discorrer sobre a pergunta: “viver juntos, por que razão?”, o autor refere que a lógica da constituição de conjuntos repousa sobre a regra do reconhecimento de uma similitude, com frequência, física ou psíquica, sendo esse ponto comum o que nos permite estar junto do outro. O autor retoma Sartre para demonstrar que essa lógica inicial é precária, na medida em que o filósofo existencialista retrata que o que nos permite fazer grupo é o que nos acontece de comum, seja em torno de uma história, ideia, causa ou de um sermão. Seguindo essa lógica, a fraternidade não é de todo mal, pois permite que os humanos possam livremente escolher se unirem, posto que, a partir da filosofia, o humano tem a liberdade de escolher ficar só. A a liberdade, portanto, é o comum da humanidade para Sartre (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Bachler, 2020</xref>).</p>
			<p>Contudo, para além da discussão que a noção de liberdade faz render, o que demandaria um outro texto, enfatizamos neste trabalho os impasses dessa união através do amor fraterno, afeto que fundamenta os vínculos no seio de uma instituição religiosa. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Bachler (2020</xref>) afirma que essa concepção de viver juntos resulta em graves consequências, dentre elas, a de que:</p>
			<disp-quote>
				<p>Uma vez instituída livremente [a fraternidade], criam-se também restrições para os membros do grupo, obrigações recíprocas. Essas restrições, necessárias para a vida do grupo, criam um direito de todos sobre cada um, que pode mesmo revelar-se na forma de violência. O grupo arrisca a cada instante de exercer esta violência contra o indivíduo (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Bachler, 2020</xref>, p. 51).</p>
			</disp-quote>
			<p>Assim, como Freud referiu acerca do apagamento do sujeito imerso na massa e no amor narcísico, nos parece que a fraternidade também se apresenta como uma forma de incorrer na violência que é a instauração do Um, do ideal, sobre a singularidade dos demais, os sujeitos reais. O amor fraterno produz vínculos fortes, por vezes muito importantes em termos de luta coletiva no campo social, mas também, por outro lado, arrisca a todo instante aglutinar o indivíduo, a fim de evitar o risco de que alguma diferença ou voz dissonante desestabilize a união do grupo. Nesse sentido, consideramos que o amor fraterno faz as vezes do amor narcísico.</p>
			<p>No romance Southernmost: Rumo ao Sul, do escritor americano Silas House, o autor narra sobre a história de um pastor que coordenava a igreja de uma pequena cidade conservadora e tradicional do Tennessee, nos Estados Unidos. O romance inicia em meio a uma catástrofe natural que a cidade sofre, quando chuvas intensas começam a alagar a região, deixando famílias desabrigadas. Em meio ao caos, acontece o desaparecimento do filho de nove anos que saiu sem avisar à procura do cachorro da família, mas que retornou, após um breve e desesperador tempo, acompanhado de um casal homossexual que o encontrou e que acabara de perder a casa para a enchente. O pastor, que se chama Asher, angustiado por ter temido a perda do filho, num gesto de agradecimento e compaixão, decide abrigar o casal em sua própria casa, escolha que não se efetivou por conta da esposa de Asher e mãe da criança, que expressou: “Eles não podem ficar aqui. (...) O que a congregação vai dizer? Não é certo. (...) Eu sei o que eles são. (...) Eles são… você sabe o que eles são, Asher. Não podemos deixar que se aproximem de Justin [filho do casal]” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B25">House, 2019</xref>, p. 29).</p>
			<p>Desconcertado com a rigidez e o preconceito da esposa, Asher começa a viver momentos de angústia e de muitos questionamentos acerca das escolhas que fez na vida a partir dos princípios daquela comunidade, entre elas, a ruptura da relação com o próprio irmão. Ele lembra que, na juventude deles, quando o irmão assumiu a homossexualidade, a família não suportou, e o irmão - que esperava pelo acolhimento e abertura da parte de Asher - percebeu-se sozinho ao notar que o pastor não se diferenciou do discurso parental. No instante seguinte à lembrança, a culpa o toma e a preocupação com a criação do filho começa a crescer, pois até então não enxergava que o amor que tentava pregar na igreja era diferente do amor que os crentes praticavam, este último, um amor que ergue muros, isola e violenta.</p>
			<p>Asher se divorcia de Lydia por não conseguir mais compartilhar da mesma experiência de vida da esposa. Ele também é excomungado da igreja, e a história do livro se desenrola através da tentativa desesperada desse homem de fazer as pazes com seu irmão e de proteger o filho de uma criação que compreende o outro-diferente como uma falha da espécie humana. Ao se distanciar daquela comunidade para ir à procura do irmão em outro Estado, o narrador do romance tece comentários acerca da figura materna dos irmãos:</p>
			<disp-quote>
				<p>Depois que Luke [o irmão] foi embora, ele [Asher] sofreu uma espécie de lavagem cerebral. Ela [a mãe] o convenceu de que Luke não se importava com eles, que ao apontar aquela arma para ele [Luke], havia tentado salvar sua alma do inferno. Amor rigoroso, ela dizia. O tipo de amor que Deus havia demonstrado pelo mundo ao causar o Dilúvio, quando apenas Noé atendeu seu chamado. O tipo de amor que Deus havia mostrado a Abraão quando o convenceu a matar seu próprio filho, Isaac, antes de impedir que isso ocorresse no último minuto. O tipo de amor que Jó havia sofrido. (...) Oremos juntos, Asher, oremos pela alma de Luke para que ele veja os erros do seu modo de ser [ênfase adicionada] (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B25">House, 2019</xref>, p. 122).</p>
			</disp-quote>
			<p>O reencontro com o irmão, em convívio há mais de dez anos, marca um dos momentos mais duros do romance, especialmente quando Luke se põe a falar o que ficou silenciado por tanto tempo:</p>
			<disp-quote>
				<p>Eu não fugi para te castigar. Fugi porque vocês todos (...) fizeram com que eu me sentisse envergonhado. Você sabe o que é andar neste mundo com todas as pessoas pensando saber que sabem tudo a seu respeito? (...) No Tennesse as pessoas não me aceitavam [ênfase adicionada]. Elas me toleravam. Até mesmo você. E eu não queria viver daquele jeito, como a aberração da cidade (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B25">House, 2019</xref>, p. 265).</p>
			</disp-quote>
			<p>O romance todo apresenta passagens que demonstram a desertificação simbólica e o estreitamento de sentido do discurso religioso, bem como da supressão da pluralidade de existência que ocorre quando a experiência religiosa, no seio da família ou da comunidade, torna-se fiadora do ataque ao outro. As atitudes que Asher bancaram, em meio a um estado de extrema angústia, graves consequências para ele; ao mesmo tempo que lhe possibilitaram uma outra experiência de vida, marcada pela presença de novos lugares, pessoas e saberes que o desconstruíram para que ele pudesse se reconstruir a seu modo. Ao final do livro, Asher não encontrou um final feliz, mas se encontrou numa condição de vida mais leve, livre do preconceito e da culpa. </p>
			<p>No intuito de nos encaminharmos para o final deste texto e considerando o exposto até aqui, nos ocuparemos a partir de agora acerca das questões: como pensar o amor, desde uma outra lógica de funcionamento que não seja a do amor narcísico? Uma lógica que, apesar de não garantir, pode contribuir para o engajamento subjetivo de cada sujeito na produção de uma relação ética com o outro-diferente.</p>
		</sec>
		<sec>
			<title>Uma outra lógica para o amor e a ética na relação entre sujeitos</title>
			<p>Freud, no incansável trabalho de fundar um lugar para a psicanálise no mundo, diferenciando-a de outras áreas do conhecimento, como a psicologia de Wundt, demarcou a singularidade da psicanálise desde uma tomada de posição crucial. Essa posição diz respeito à diferença da psicanálise diante das práticas psicoterapêuticas calcadas na ciência positivista, em ascensão na época, diferença demarcada pela resposta ética e não técnica acerca da prática psicanalítica (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Darriba et al., 2009</xref>). De acordo com os autores, ao responder desde uma posição ética, Freud rompe com uma lógica científica pautada no aprimoramento do método, viés científico que trabalha no sentido de que o objeto ceda, em nome de uma clínica que sustente o “ceder ao objeto” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Darriba et al., 2009</xref>, p. 172). </p>
			<p>Essa particularidade é reconhecida em <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">Lacan (1991</xref>), quando ele determina que a prática da psicanálise é a sua ética, posto que a psicanálise não se reduz a um conjunto de técnicas e procedimentos a serem aplicados para fins de controle, e sim, na reflexão e expansão da condição desejante/faltante de cada sujeito, motor de vida: “é neste caminho que o autor defende que a finalidade da ação ética para Freud não é o bem, mas o Real, introduzindo aqui a noção de das Ding” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Amaral &amp; Costa, 2020</xref>, p. 115). </p>
			<p>Sem nos aprofundarmos na noção do termo das Ding, cabe aqui ressaltar que ele está relacionado “à Coisa”, isto é, ao fictício objeto capaz de obturar a falta estrutural, causa do desamparo, tal qual mencionamos anteriormente acerca da coisa religiosa. Assim, ceder ao objeto, em outras palavras, é abrir mão da fantasia de que existe a Coisa, ou ainda, o Outro capaz de completar o Eu, renúncia imprescindível para lançar-se à experiência do desejo e do amor na “cena do Dois” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Badiou, 2013</xref>).</p>
			<p>Para pensarmos essa cena, é necessário considerar que o amor “leva em conta o acaso e o encontro, e que seria, fundamentalmente, da ordem da disjunção e da diferença” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B35">Pacheco, 2015</xref>, p. 31). Nessa lógica, o amor não é um acontecimento essencialmente seguro e, por isso, o amor tal qual o encontro “não é teorizável nem racionável (...), pertence ao que escapa, e deveria escapar a toda programação. Estamos lá e alguma coisa irrompe. A presença do outro não nos deixa tranquilos” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Cifali, 1999</xref>, p. 145). O amor na “cena do Dois” é, portanto, um amor que não se acovarda frente às intempéries do desejo, e não almeja a perversão do Dois em Um porque não deseja a completude. Nesse cenário, ascender à obliteração da falta é o mesmo que selar o voto de morte de um amor motor de vida para o Eu e o Outro.</p>
			<p>A “cena do Dois” contempla o cenário de um amor que aceita a diferença, que deixa (a) desejar, põe em movimento a palavra e dá lugar aos corpos, às experiências e aos sonhos. Esta seria uma outra lógica para o amor, o que nos permite reconhecer que, para além do amor narcísico e do amor fraterno, há um amour-manqué, um amor que, felizmente, é falho naquilo que comumente esperamos dele. Para que esse amor, capaz de fomentar a ética do desejo na relação entre sujeitos, inscreva-se no laço social, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B37">Siqueira (2014</xref>) ressalta que é preciso:</p>
			<disp-quote>
				<p>Introduzir a falta no coração da questão do amor. Em outras palavras, precisa barrar o excesso de plenitude narcísica que impede o advento da condição desejante, em virtude da hipertrofia egóica, bem como minimizar a reciprocidade esperada entre sujeitos no amor (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B37">Siqueira, 2014</xref>, p. 8).</p>
			</disp-quote>
			<p>Assim, no campo do amor e no campo da psicanálise, nenhuma promessa de completude pode ser feita, independentemente de como essa promessa venha a se travestir, ao preço de que a fenda do desejo se estreite a ponto de que o sujeito incorra numa vida fadada à homogeneização. A resultante disso é o empobrecimento da singularidade e do laço social, através de uma desertificação das possibilidades de existência dos sujeitos no mundo.</p>
			<p>Apostamos que essa lógica do amor falho, amour-manqué, sustentada nos registros do Simbólico e do Real, aparece como uma nova forma de discurso, a contrapelo do discurso religioso, como abertura para a criação-invenção do laço social: “o amor, nesse texto, é o signo, apontado como tal, de que se troca de razão (...) Mudamos de razão, quer dizer - mudamos de discurso” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Lacan, 1985</xref>, p. 23). Para tanto, é preciso nos livrarmos dos impasses narcísicos que sentenciam o amor à relação especular e à reciprocidade incondicional, só assim, uma outra lógica para o amor pode surgir na contramão do mandamento “amarás teu próximo como a ti mesmo”, caminho que permite o engajamento de cada um na incansável tarefa de sustentar um laço social mais plural e ético.</p>
			<p>Ante o exposto, não é exagero afirmar que a psicanálise promove e salvaguarda a racionalidade de uma ética que permite o reconhecimento da alteridade, premissa que fundamenta toda relação referenciada à noção do desejo, esta que nos condena a sermos afetados por tudo que a nossa condição faltante significa e dela decorre. É nessa lógica que, ante o forte egoísmo que erguemos como proteção contra os impossíveis do mal-estar que nos estrutura, devemos começar a amar: “afinal é preciso começar a amar, para não adoecer, e é inevitável adoecer, quando, devido à frustração, não se pode amar” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Freud, 1914/2010b</xref>, p. 29). Só assim o amor pode funcionar como uma ética para o laço social e para a singularidade do sujeito, na medida em que opera como um saber-fazer, com o desamparo fundamental e os conflitos da diferença que radicalmente demarcam a nossa humanidade.</p>

			<p>Neste trabalho não tivemos como pretensão deslegitimar o amor e a religião, mas sim pensar, por meio da psicanálise, sobre esses dois fenômenos do mundo humano a partir de uma análise crítica de suas incidências no laço social de nossa época. Compreendemos que a questão da religião e a complexidade dessa na experiência humana precisam continuar sendo objeto de estudo e reflexão. Tentamos demonstrar que o amor, reconhecido socialmente como uma espécie de sentimento salvador, apresenta limites quanto à expectativa que depositamos nele, podendo aparecer no campo social sob diferentes formas, das quais cada uma resulta em consequências para o sujeito e para o laço social.</p>
			<p>Através de vinhetas clínicas, cinematográficas e literárias, procuramos refletir acerca dos problemas que o discurso religioso comporta, especialmente quando incorre em violência desmedida contra o outro, a diferença, a pluralidade do ser e das culturas. Freud em, Por Que a Guerra?, carta que escreveu para Einstein em 1932, nos adverte que é impossível acabarmos com a guerra; contudo, ressalta que tudo aquilo que trabalha a favor da cultura evita a guerra (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Freud, 1932/2010d</xref>). Trabalhar a favor do cultivo da pluralidade na experiência humana, no tema que estrutura esse trabalho, é evitar que a religião atraque no mundo “como se fosse uma âncora jogada, num manancial de sentido, de sentido da existência, da vivência com a alteridade, da relação de dependência e ambiguidade que se tem em relação a outrem” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Binkowski et al., 2018</xref>, p. 117). Insistir nisso é resistir à instituição da religião como um elemento bélico. </p>
			<p>Por fim, quanto à religião, que cada sujeito possa ter a liberdade de recorrer às crenças que lhe convenham enquanto um recurso de apaziguamento particular da angústia, ante o desamparo fundamental do humano. Que as premissas religiosas jamais se tornem a lei do mundo humano, pois como a psicanálise bem nos adverte, na medida em que a religião é a Lei, não existirá lei a qual a religião estará submetida.</p>
			<p>Quanto ao amor, que ele possa existir na sua versão mais falha - aquela compreendida pela face do Simbólico e do Real -, instâncias que contribuem para o engajamento subjetivo de cada sujeito na interminável tarefa de salvaguardar um laço social plural e não totalitário, posto que esse amor mantém a fenda do desejo aberta.</p>
			<p>Portanto, é no reconhecimento de que ninguém escapa de uma condição de incompletude que nos é possível ascender a uma condição desejante, esta que nos permite ir na direção do outro a fim de construir vínculos de ligação desde uma relação ética entre sujeitos. Nesse sentido, a experiência do amour-manqué implica em não perder de vista que, quanto à reivindicação para si de um amor que faz desejar, deve-se acrescentar a vontade de que exista amor e desejo para o outro também.</p>

				<title>Abstract</title>
				<p>This article offers a critique of love’s effectiveness within today’s social bond, with particular attention to its narcissistic and fraternal forms - both strongly underwritten by religious discourse that, between 2019 and 2022, merged with state policy. The guiding problem is framed as follows: how can other modalities of love foster each subject’s subjective engagement in the ongoing task of safeguarding a plural, non-totalitarian social bond? Drawing on clinical, cinematic, and literary vignettes, we deepen the theoretical discussion surrounding this question</p>

		<body>
			<p>Why develop a critique of love’s effectiveness for sustaining the social bond in a time so marked by hate speech, unrestrained violence, and the desire for the other’s death? Isn’t it precisely the lack of love that engenders the worst in human beings today? There are many ways to approach love in the social bond, and the path we take here proceeds from: 1) a theoretical analysis of the 2019-2022 presidential period; and 2) a critical reflection on the religious belief that fraternal love constitutes an efficient social resource - one that overlooks the impasses this mode of attachment poses for an ethical relation between subjects (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Bachler, 2020</xref>).</p>
			<p>We often hear that the contemporary world is in crisis. Just as often, we encounter ready-made experts with cures at the tip of their tongues - answers marked by reductions as violent as the crisis they claim to remedy. Every crisis compels us to revisit a period’s impasses through new questions so that we may reassess certain assumptions; after all, “a crisis becomes a disaster only when we respond to it with preformed judgments, that is, with prejudices” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Arendt, 1954/2014</xref>, p. 223). Thus, to cling to simplistic answers, outsource responsibility, and - neurotically - seek exits along well-worn paths is to sharpen the crisis rather than seize the opportunity for reflection and creation that it affords.</p>
			<p>To proceed, we must recognize that the society that defends freedom and democratic principles is the same one that clamors for domination and voluntary servitude (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">La Boétie, 1576/2016</xref>). This becomes evident in today’s Western context, where fundamentalist discourses and polarizing movements return in an attempt to (re)instate a mythical order within the social field.</p>
			<p>In Brazil, for example, since the penultimate presidential election we have witnessed the intensification of religious discourse in politics (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Binkowski, 2021</xref>), which has contributed, among other effects, to the strengthening of the politics of enmity (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B34">Mbembe, 2021</xref>) - i.e., policies that organize society through a we/them division while fueling the perverse fantasy of a hierarchy of the human. Whether through the outgoing president’s recurring sign-off after official addresses - “Brasil acima de tudo, Deus acima de todos” (Brazil above everything, God above all) - or through the “defense of the family” as a hallmark of a government intent on establishing an ideal model to be followed by “every decent Brazilian citizen,” recent years have shown what the absence of the plural in the defense of The Family betrays: a reductionist, segregating violence that shaped that administration’s policy, as if the return of old moralisms and prejudices could resolve our era’s social impasses. In this sense, we concur that the weakness of the State and, in Brazil’s case, the State’s complicity with religious movements “leave many openings for this type of discourse to be invoked by groups that come to power” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Binkowski et al., 2020</xref>, p. 262).</p>
			<p>The documentary Intervenção - Amor não Quer Dizer Grande Coisa, directed by Tales <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">Ab’Sáber, Rubens Rewald, and Gustavo Aranda (2017</xref>), shows how problematic it can be to align religious discourse with political governance. Composed of multiple clips, it captures the denialism, paranoia, and fervent cultism of far-right groups who mobilized against the sitting government between 2015 and 2016. The hate-filled speeches we witness - replete with insults and threats - expose the human species’ precariousness when faced with the challenge of sustaining a world without wishing to offend or kill one another.</p>
			<p>Among these discourses, some still resonate today: the veneration of military intervention; resistance to abortion’s legalization; and the belief that no act in the name of the Lord can be called a sin - as seen in the pastoral counseling depicted in Gabriel <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B32">Mascaro’s film Divino Amor (2019</xref>): “This sentence justifies in itself every kind of absurdity. It licenses lying for the Lord’s cause; it licenses insults (…) and, ultimately, it licenses killing for the Lord’s cause. The theological eschatology the film suggests is the saddest part for me” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B23">Gonçalves, 2019</xref>, p. 9).</p>
			<p>Psychoanalysis has long recognized that psychic and social life are structured by an irresolvable conflict between the interests of the ego and those of the group (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Freud, 1912-1913/2012</xref>). In the interplay that constitutes the subject, mechanisms of domination and subjection - along with feelings of love and hate - are at work; thus, even as we strive for a will to power (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Checchia, 2020</xref>), we readily settle into positions of subjection. These dynamics also appear in the ties many subjects forge with religious leaders and ideas (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud, 1921/2011</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">1927/2014</xref>), reinforcing <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Hirt’s (2007</xref>) thesis as recalled by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Binkowski (2021</xref>): “both psychoanalysis and religion concern themselves with the same space of psychic life, the one left open by the absent object” (p. 41).</p>
			<p>In light of these considerations, the pages that follow will examine: 1) the theoretical-clinical contributions psychoanalysis offers for analyzing this force field that marks human psychic and social life; 2) the religious “thing” and the function it performs within the psyche; and 3) the problem posed by the religious belief in fraternal love as an efficient social resource for an ethical relation between subjects. Our aim is to sketch pathways toward the central question of this work: how can other modalities of love foster each subject’s engagement in the never-ending task of safeguarding a plural, non-totalitarian social bond?</p>
			<sec>
				<title>Subject Formation and the Social in Freud</title>
				<p>Psychoanalysis offers a theory of subject formation - i.e., the constitution of psychic life in humans - and this sets it apart from other fields of knowledge, especially because it does not understand our functioning through a consciousness-centered rationality. A few years after publishing The Interpretation of Dreams (1900), <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Freud (1911/2010a)</xref> formulated what he called the two principles that govern psychic life: the reality principle and the pleasure principle. According to Freud, such life rests on a conflict that is both structural and irresolvable. It is structural because the demands of the social collective often do not allow the ego’s impulses to achieve pleasure (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Freud, 1912-1913/2012</xref>). And it is irresolvable because achieving constant homeostasis in psychic life would be tantamount to its death (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Freud, 1930/2010c</xref>) - i.e., psychic death. Being alive, therefore, involves managing the tensions and helplessness produced by this conflict in each subject.</p>
				<p>When Freud recognizes the existence of the unconscious and the incidence of this structural conflict on the subject and on social phenomena, he effectively reaches the point from which we can say today that, from a psychoanalytic perspective, the “individual” does not exist - meaning our psyche cannot be characterized as indivisible. We are not a totality, because the structure is, fundamentally: 1) a split between the unconscious and the conscious; and 2) a conflict marked by a play of forces between the demands of social life and the ego’s drive-based exigencies. This undoing of the notion of the individual also appears in Freud’s work when he states the impossibility of achieving completeness (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Freud, 1930/2010c</xref>). In other words, we are marked by a permanent absence - a lack that breaks with the imaginary of a whole, autonomous individual. Despite the discomfort it causes, this psychic fact is precisely what allows movement toward life, with its states of tension and relief, polysemy, continuities, and discontinuities.</p>
				<p>As split subjects subject to all the consequences that this division brings to each person’s life, Freud could not avoid reflecting on the impact of his discoveries on the origins and configuration of social organization. In Totem and Taboo, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Freud (1912-1913/2012)</xref> narrates a parricide - the killing of the father of the primal horde - an event that opened the possibility of a social arrangement no longer anchored in the will and whims of a tyrant. Bound by the crime, the brothers - men who did not occupy the father’s exceptional place - were able to live together without the One’s desires prevailing over everyone else’s will. The construction of the totem, meant to keep the group’s history alive, consecrated the lasting memory of the brothers’ union in committing the deed, an act that instituted prohibitions on their own impulses. Thus, even if someone wished to ascend to the position once held by the father, a life free from tyranny for all required the engagement of each person in keeping that exceptional place empty.</p>
				<p>Beyond parricide, Freud also notes numerous convergences between what he calls the psychology of “peoples of nature” and the psychology of neurotics, since he treats the myth of the primal horde as a narrative that “addresses the origin of religion and morality” at the foundation of society (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Freud, 1912-1913/2012</xref>, p. 17). Among the similarities observable in so-called “primitive” and “civilized” peoples are, for example, limits imposed on sexual impulses, severe punishment for those who violate taboos, and the worship of higher entities - principles that organized the totemic system and that also organize religious systems.</p>
				<p>These Freudian considerations support the claim that the passage from the primal horde to social order does not indicate the superiority of the latter over the former - an interpretation sometimes offered by developmental readings that imagine the newer structure as more advanced than the earlier one. This matters because what is at stake between cultures is not which is superior, but that - regardless of technological advances and scientific progress - every culture organizes the social bond by electing taboos. What varies between cultures, beyond their habits and customs, is what they deem to be interdicted:</p>
				<disp-quote>
					<p>Wundt therefore maintains that taboo is the expression and derivation of primitive peoples’ belief in demonic powers. Later, it freed itself from this root and continued to be a power simply because it was one, by a kind of psychic obstinacy; thus it became the root of our moral commandments and our laws (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Freud, 1912-1913/2012</xref>, p. 51).</p>
				</disp-quote>
				<p>We can understand this psychic obstinacy to which Freud refers as the split subject’s need to cling to something that provides limits for managing the play of forces marking human psychic and social life - and meanings that help bear the helplessness proper to our condition as incomplete subjects. In this sense, the malaise that structures psychic and social life is a historical invariant; what varies historically are the forms we invent to control our drives and manage our helplessness. In other words, we are psychically vulnerable to seeking a sovereign capable of punishing and loving us.</p>
				<p>In Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud (1921/2011)</xref>, drawing on Le Bon’s reflections on the “collective soul,” returns to the French polymath’s account of what constitutes a psychological crowd and its effects on an individual’s psyche. For Le Bon, a psychological crowd arises from the union of different parts; that union forms a totality composed by the sum of the parts, producing a new being endowed with characteristics unlike those of each part taken in isolation. The immediate effect of this union on psychic life is the disappearance of the subject’s particularities upon integration into the whole, an erasure that intensifies affectivity and considerably diminishes intellectual capacity. Thus, in the phenomenon of the psychic crowd, “the heterogeneous is submerged in the homogeneous” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud, 1921/2011</xref>, p. 20); i.e., the subject becomes subject to a mode of functioning that largely erases differences.</p>
				<p>This submission is not without a yield of pleasure, insofar as the psychological crowd “tolerates no delay between its desire and its fulfillment. It feels omnipotent; [and] the notion of the impossible disappears” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud, 1921/2011</xref>, p. 25). It also brings a reduction in displeasure, given that the leader - perceived as not subject to fundamental helplessness and therefore occupying the place of exception - functions as guarantor of meanings that assuage the anxiety provoked by the conflict that constitutes us. In this mode of social communion, the resemblance to the organization of the primal horde is no coincidence, since the leader becomes “a paternal substitute” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud, 1921/2011</xref>, p. 47). The longing for the providence of a great Father corresponds to the magnitude of the need for protection in the face of human impotence and the defense against helplessness (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Freud, 1927/2014</xref>).</p>
				<p>In the same essay, Freud notes that the Church, with its community of believers, and the Army, with its armed forces, appear as two “highly organized, enduring, and artificial” masses in human history (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud, 1921/2011</xref>, p. 46). As one illustration, we can look at statistics and estimates for the number of adults who identify with some religion. According to the 2010 Census, 86.8% of Brazilians identify as Christian, and the number of Evangelicals has been steadily increasing; over the last 30 years - across the 1991, 2000, and 2010 Censuses - the Evangelical population grew by 61% in Brazil (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Gaier, 2024</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B26">Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística [IBGE], 2010</xref>). The 2022 Census has not yet finalized data for this category, but numerous reports point to continued growth in the Evangelical share of the Brazilian population (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">Capomaccio, 2023</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">CartaCapital, 2024</xref>).</p>
				<p>Churches, religious groupings, and the Army are artificial masses because “a certain external constraint is employed to prevent their dissolution and to block changes in their structure” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud, 1921/2011</xref>, p. 46). This external constraint can be understood as a fictional construction of an illusory character - something the masses cannot renounce, for the price would be their very dissolution. Along these lines, Freud observes the striking similarity between the functioning of the psychological mass and the psychology of neuroses when considering the predominance of fantasy life in both cases:</p>
				<disp-quote>
					<p>We have found that what holds for neurotics is not shared objective reality but psychic reality. A hysterical symptom rests on fantasy rather than on the repetition of real experience; the obsessive neurotic’s guilt rests on an evil intention never carried out. As in dream and in hypnosis, in the mental activity of the mass, reality-testing recedes before the force of wishes invested with affect (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud, 1921/2011</xref>, p. 29).</p>
				</disp-quote>
				<p>But what is the affect to which Freud refers in explaining a community’s renunciation of reality in favor of the homogenization of the human and of an illusion that sustains an omnipotent figure? It is precisely love. In his clinical route toward elaborating psychoanalytic theory and technique, one representation of love is what Freud calls libido. For psychoanalysis, libido names a large quantity of energy that mobilizes drive vectors toward “everything that can be encompassed by the word ‘love’” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud, 1921/2011</xref>, p. 43). Freud states that this energy “comes from the theory of affectivity” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud, 1921/2011</xref>, p. 43) and that, on the one hand, it allows the subject to love themself; on the other, it allows the subject to love the other - an insight that led Freud to hypothesize that relations of love “also constitute the essence of the collective soul” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud, 1921/2011</xref>, p. 45). With this, Freud proposes that, beyond love being the force impelling the union of a community characterized as a psychological mass, the homogenization of the subject is justified “for love of them” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud, 1921/2011</xref>, p. 45) - i.e., for the love of those others and of that Other that compose the (comm)unity.</p>
				<p>These considerations raise questions about the challenge every society faces in sustaining a world without killing one another. If reveling in recognition and love from the other depends on erasing one’s own difference - i.e., on always agreeing with the mass and never opposing what keeps it cohesive - how do we avoid segregating those who resist the erasure of singularity and avoid intolerance toward those who do not mirror my image and likeness? And if the existence of alterity is not subordinated to the sovereign’s authority - if the other’s presence exposes and weakens the illusion that fuels the fraternal love affect - what resources are necessary for ethical relations between subjects to exist without needing to be circumscribed in the name of that love?</p>

			<sec>
				<title>A New Era with Old Answers to the Same Questions</title>
				<p>For much of history, the Church was regarded as a central institution of the civilizing process, operating as a regulator of subjectivity and the social field. It claimed its place in the world through a specific discourse, took on the mission of supporting humans in the face of death, directing them toward spiritual elevation and the love of God, and protecting them from inner and outer forces that lead to worldly habits and pleasures.</p>
				<p>Religious discourse - understood as a moral rationality and a factory of meaning for human life <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">(Freud, 1927/2014</xref>) - is characterized by establishing what is good and what is evil. It constructs a universal vision of the world and of being, a model historically nurtured by the ideal of the European white man, as in the case of the Roman Catholic Church. As spaces of communion for those who defend and preach the same ideals, churches foster the union of communities worldwide, all governed by principles their leaders set as a compass for the right formation of the world and of the human being.</p>
				<p>Yet the human world predates the rise of the Catholic Church by far. Returning to the example above, we cannot ignore that those united “in Christ’s love” have long excluded - and still exclude - anyone who does not conform to the ideal with which the brothers identify.</p>
				<p>The deeper problem is not simply the failure to integrate the “other” into the group or religious institution. It lies in the historic fixation of those others in the place of barbarians and deviants for resisting a life oriented by a model preestablished by an Other - fixations that induce particular ways of seeing and acting toward the different. This is why the secularization of the State is so crucial for civil organization: a secular State is a society capable of freeing itself “from any influence of a religious system over its civil, political, and legal organization” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Binkowski et al., 2018</xref>, p. 112).</p>
				<p>Examples of extermination resulting from the fusion of governance and religious systems include persecution and murder in the name of the Inquisition and the catechization of enslaved peoples in the Americas under the banners of conquest and “civilizing” progress. In such cases, if the “barbarian’s” fate was not death, survival required subjection to homogenization and docility so they could be governed easily without disturbing the order set by ecclesiastical tribunals or slaveholders.</p>
				<p>Civilization, in this sense, can be read as a massive effort - on the part of masses who defended progress through the colonization of the other - to reject the plurality of cultures that compose the human world. They did so by refusing to abdicate the attempt to install a Father, inflate a single meaning for human existence, and capitalize society through a we/them division. The consequences are grave for those who refuse to submit to a mass identity that seeks to render all other forms of being and relating invisible. These consequences are captured in Freud’s observation that “in the blindness of love, the individual may, without remorse, become a criminal” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Freud, 1921/2011</xref>, p. 72).</p>
				<p>Since <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Lacan (1985</xref>), we know that a discourse determines a particular form of social bond - i.e., the ways desires, prohibitions, and criteria for qualifying or disqualifying modes of being are organized within a society, based on a symbolic architecture that takes on the value of truth:</p>
				<disp-quote>
					<p>Discourse is a structure founded in the very logic of language and its effects on reality. It is, moreover, organized such that it establishes historical forms of social bond. Thus, discourse is not conceived as a “primary reality to be interpreted for its meaning,” but as the effect of the signifier’s combinatorics on the world (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B36">Rabinovich, 2001</xref>, p. 2).</p>
				</disp-quote>
				<disp-quote>
					<p>This means that, within discourse, the places and their rules of articulation precede and prevail over the destinies of how speaking beings are linked (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Couto et al., 2018</xref>, p. 95).</p>
				</disp-quote>
				<p>The social bond, then, can be understood as a way of forming ties with others through a shared discourse to which we feel we belong - but also to which we become alienated - since our way of looking at and approaching the other is mediated by a linguistic operation that predetermines places and rules. Under this condition, in the eyes of religiously anchored leaders and their disciples, difference often appears as a grave threat and offense, insofar as the grammar of ecclesial commandments carries a historical inscription that treats difference as a dangerous flaw, an error to be corrected.</p>
				<p>The hatred and intolerance directed at those who sustain singularities and mark differences enact the fear of exposing this fantasy - the one that covers over the incompleteness of the split subject, a fantasy that has mobilized religious masses for centuries. This is not to devalue the psychic function of fantasy - psychoanalysis treats it as a fundamental operator of psychic life. Our critique targets the return, in a new era, of old fundamentalist answers to the same question: how are we to handle helplessness and difference - elements that inscribe humanity at its root?</p>
				<p>According to <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Binkowski (2021</xref>), the “religious thing” appears as the promised object that plugs the split subject’s fundamental helplessness, relieving the anxieties of inner conflict and meaninglessness. From this, we can infer that the religious subject - understood here as someone who cannot separate from the mass - effectively resigns the psychic work of coming to terms with their incomplete condition, insisting instead on a truth forged by an Other rather than on encountering their own truth-as-lack. When recognized, that absence allows the ego “to produce itself as a subject out of difference” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Binkowski, 2021</xref>, p. 41).</p>
				<p>In terms of psychic constitution, On Narcissism warns of the necessary psychic work of separating from the desire of the maternal Other for the ego - understood as the instance capable of projecting a psychic image of the body - to emerge (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Freud, 1914/2010b</xref>). Differentiating from this first Other is necessary psychic work; when the subject abdicates it, constitutional impasses appear. Beyond this, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Freud (1914/2010b)</xref> also outlines a modality we can call narcissistic love: love directed toward the same, toward the one who mirrors my image and likeness - akin to the symbiotic mother-infant bond - which we regard as the most common version of love in today’s social bond (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Jorge, 2019</xref>).</p>
				<p>Through narcissistic love - like the “religious thing” - we seek a completeness that promises to free us from our condition as split subjects, as well as from a non-total encounter with the other. Characterized by a love that recognizes only the register of the Imaginary, in which single, closed meanings seem possible, narcissistic love follows this logic:</p>
				<disp-quote>
					<p>If I love someone, they must deserve my love in some way. (…) They will deserve my love if they are sufficiently like me, in important respects, that I can love myself in them; or they will deserve it if they are so much more perfect than I that I can love my ego ideal in them. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Freud, 1930/2010c</xref>, p. 59)</p>
				</disp-quote>
				<p>Brief clinical vignettes from analytic practice illustrate the sting of dealing with this form of love. A young Jehovah’s Witness - previously disfellowshipped for a habit repudiated by the group’s principles - manages to return to the congregation only to face repeated episodes of exclusion, prompted by “brothers’” concern over the “bad influences” his allegedly worldly behavior might exert. When asked in analysis why every request for distance comes from fellow Witnesses, he falls silent and, surprised, notes that he has never had problems with outsiders over his way of being - or the fact that he is divorced. Another common scenario involves Jehovah’s Witness women who do not separate from their husbands for fear of being cut off from the group, and who blame themselves for failing to fulfill the “duties of a woman toward a man,” even when the husband is a heavy drinker. Not infrequently, this is coupled with a wish that the husband would commit adultery so they could leave without tarnishing their own image before the group.</p>
				<p>The encounter with the “religious thing” - with a single meaning - is not always wholly negative, since it can soothe anxiety by giving sense to the Real for the one who loves (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Jorge, 2019</xref>). Still, the illusion produced by discourses structured around narcissistic love exacts both a personal and a cultural price:</p>
				<disp-quote>
					<p>This legacy of religious conceptions is generally presented to us as divine revelation. But that presentation is itself part of the religious system, which completely ignores what is known of the historical development of these ideas and their differences across eras and cultures (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Freud, 1927/2014</xref>).</p>
				</disp-quote>
				<p>In the Western world, the management of religious discourse in the face of fundamental helplessness and the discomfort of difference occurs through monotheism:</p>
				<disp-quote>
					<p>Monotheism - as read by psychoanalysis since Freud and with Lacan, among others - bears a history of violence, erasures, and subversions. What monotheism installs (…) is a vast system of filiation, alliance, and recognition in which the ancient gods become demons, and where the deity remains almost always outside the register of image, language, and the sensory (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Binkowski, 2021</xref>, p. 41).</p>
				</disp-quote>
				<p>Psychoanalysis maintains that this illusion is not an “error,” since its motive is wish-fulfillment; but it also recognizes how religious belief can approach psychiatric delusion (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Freud, 1927/2014</xref>), particularly through the reparative function it tends to take on in relation to the reality of human condition and world. The strengthening of monotheism - i.e., validating and elevating a single divinity - feeds multiple radicalisms to the point of turning religion into “a warlike element that cancels any negotiation of difference” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Binkowski, 2021</xref>, p. 42). When such crude attempts to “repair the world” by erasing or segregating difference are absorbed into state policy, society is subjected to deadly imperatives - deciding, for example, which lives deserve state protection and which do not, which lives may/should be killed and which may not (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">Levine, 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B33">Mbembe, 2018</xref>).</p>
				<p>Even while acknowledging the psychic value of religious conceptions, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Freud (1927/2014)</xref> argues that humans can forgo the consolations of religious illusion, and he rejects the idea that we cannot bear life’s weight and reality’s hostility without relying on faith in God:</p>
				<disp-quote>
					<p>It is something already if a person knows they can count only on their own forces; then they learn to use them properly. And humans are not entirely without resources; since the time of the Flood their science has taught them much, and it will further increase their power. As for fate’s inevitabilities, against which there is no remedy, they will learn to endure them with resignation. Of what use is the mirage of a vast estate on the Moon whose harvest no one has ever seen? (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Freud, 1927/2014</xref>).</p>
				</disp-quote>
				<p>Another brief vignette from the consulting room speaks to our time. A nine-year-old boy struggled with the starkly different economic conditions and modes of upbringing he experienced in his maternal and paternal families - the latter committed to Christian values and financially stable, the former living in social vulnerability. He recounted being expelled from a classroom at the Adventist school he attended after the teacher felt disrespected by a comment he made. Curious, I asked what he had said. He recalled the teacher telling the class that Jesus always looks after everyone on Earth. Affected by the contradictions he perceives in adults - and by the contradictions he lives between two very different family worlds - he replied: “The Earth is too big and too full of people for Jesus to take care of everyone.” In that moment of disbelief and indignation at the truth he already senses about the world, the child did what children often do: he punctured the adult’s fantasy. Confronted by the child’s exposure of her own truth-as-lack, the teacher could not tolerate it and demanded that the little “whistleblower” leave the classroom.</p>

				<title>Fraternity: Another Version of Narcissistic Love</title>
				<p>
					<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Bachler (2020</xref>) offers important reflections on the ambiguities of fraternity. In addressing the question “why live together?”, he notes that the logic of forming groups rests on recognizing a similitude - often physical or psychic - which becomes the shared point that allows us to be with the other. Drawing on Sartre, Bachler shows how precarious this initial logic is: what enables group formation is whatever happens to us in common, whether around a history, an idea, a cause, or a sermon. On this view, fraternity is not entirely negative; it allows people to choose freely to unite, since, for Sartre, the human being is free to choose solitude. Freedom, therefore, is what humanity holds in common (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Bachler, 2020</xref>).</p>
				<p>Beyond the broad debate that the notion of freedom invites - one that would require a separate text-this work emphasizes the impasses of union through fraternal love, the affect that undergirds bonds within religious institutions. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Bachler (2020</xref>) argues that this conception of living together has serious consequences, including that:</p>
				<disp-quote>
					<p>Once [fraternity] is freely instituted, it also creates constraints for group members - reciprocal obligations. These constraints, necessary for the group’s life, create a right of all over each one, which may even reveal itself in the form of violence. At every moment, the group risks exercising this violence against the individual (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Bachler, 2020</xref>, p. 51).</p>
				</disp-quote>
				<p>In this way, much as Freud describes the subject’s erasure within the mass and under narcissistic love, fraternity also appears as a mode that imposes the One - the ideal - over the singularity of real subjects. Fraternal love can produce strong bonds, sometimes crucial for collective struggle in the social field, but it also risks, at every turn, agglomerating the individual so as to avoid any difference or dissenting voice that might destabilize the group’s cohesion. In this sense, fraternal love often operates as a variant of narcissistic love.</p>
				<p>Silas House’s novel Southernmost portrays this dynamic. The story follows Asher, a pastor in a small, conservative town in Tennessee. The narrative opens during a natural disaster that leaves families homeless. Amid the chaos, Asher’s nine-year-old son goes missing while searching for the family dog, then returns with a gay couple who found him - and who have just lost their home to the flood. Out of gratitude and compassion, Asher decides to shelter the couple in his home, a choice immediately blocked by his wife, who insists: “They can’t stay here. (…) What will the congregation say? It isn’t right. (…) I know what they are. (…) They are… you know what they are, Asher. We can’t let them get close to Justin” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B25">House, 2019</xref>, p. 29).</p>
				<p>Shaken by his wife’s rigidity and prejudice, Asher spirals into anguish and self-questioning about the life he has built around his community’s principles - including his rupture with his own brother. He recalls that when his brother came out, the family could not bear it, and the brother - hoping for Asher’s support - found himself alone when Asher echoed the parental discourse. Guilt follows, as does concern for his son’s upbringing, for Asher begins to see that the love he preached from the pulpit was not the love the faithful practiced - a love that erects walls, isolates, and harms.</p>
				<p>Asher divorces Lydia, unable to share her way of living, and is excommunicated from the church. The novel unfolds around his desperate attempt to reconcile with his brother and protect his son from a formation that reads the other-as-different as a human flaw. As he leaves that community to search for his brother in another state, the narrator reflects on the brothers’ mother:</p>
				<disp-quote>
					<p>After Luke left, [Asher] went through a kind of brainwashing. She convinced him Luke didn’t care about them, that when [Luke] pointed that gun at him, he’d been trying to save his soul from hell. Tough love, she said. The kind of love God showed the world by sending the Flood, when only Noah heeded His call. The kind of love God showed Abraham when He convinced him to kill his son Isaac-then stopped him at the last minute. The kind of love Job endured. (...) Let’s pray together, Asher, let’s pray for Luke’s soul so that he can see the errors of his ways [emphasis added] (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B25">House, 2019</xref>, p. 122).</p>
				</disp-quote>
				<p>The brothers’ reunion - after more than a decade apart - is one of the novel’s hardest passages, especially when Luke finally voices the long-silenced truth:</p>
				<disp-quote>
					<p>I didn’t run away to punish you. I ran because you all (…) made me feel ashamed. Do you know what it’s like to walk through this world with people thinking they know everything about you? (…) In Tennessee people didn’t accept me [emphasis added]. They tolerated me. Even you. And I didn’t want to live like that, as the town freak (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B25">House, 2019</xref>, p. 265).</p>
				</disp-quote>
				<p>Throughout, the novel shows the symbolic desertification and narrowing of meaning produced by religious discourse, as well as the suppression of plural forms of existence when religious experience - within family or community - guarantees the attack on the other. Asher’s choices, made in acute anguish, bring heavy consequences; at the same time, they open him to another way of living - new places, people, and knowledges that deconstruct him so that he might reconstruct himself on his own terms. He does not find a fairy-tale ending, but he finds a lighter condition of life, free of prejudice and guilt.</p>
				<p>With this in mind, and moving toward a conclusion, we turn to the questions: how might love be thought from a logic other than narcissistic love? What logic - though it can guarantee nothing - could still support each subject’s engagement in producing an ethical relation with the other-as-different?</p>
			</sec>
			<sec>
				<title>Another Logic for Love and Ethics in Relations Between Subjects</title>
				<p>As Freud labored to secure a place for psychoanalysis distinct from other fields - such as Wundt’s psychology - he marked its singularity through a crucial stance: psychoanalysis responds ethically, not technically, in clinical practice (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Darriba et al., 2009</xref>). In this sense, Freud breaks with a scientific logic oriented to perfecting method, which calls on the object to yield; psychoanalysis, by contrast, sustains a clinic that “yields to the object” in an ethical key (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Darriba et al., 2009</xref>, p. 172).</p>
				<p>
					<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">Lacan (1991</xref>) recognizes this particularity when he asserts that the practice of psychoanalysis is its ethics. Psychoanalysis is not a toolkit of procedures for control; it is oriented to reflecting on and expanding each subject’s desiring/lacking condition - the motor of life: “in this direction, the author argues that the aim of ethical action for Freud is not the Good but the Real, introducing here the notion of das Ding” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Amaral &amp; Costa, 2020</xref>, p. 115).</p>
				<p>Without delving deeply into das Ding, it is tied to “the Thing” - the fictive object imagined to plug structural lack and thus to resolve helplessness - akin to the “religious thing” mentioned earlier. To “yield to the object,” in other words, is to renounce the fantasy that such a Thing exists, or that there is an Other who can complete the ego; this renunciation is essential to entering the experience of desire and love on the “scene of Two” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Badiou, 2013</xref>).</p>
				<p>To think this scene, we must recognize that love “takes account of chance and encounter and is, fundamentally, of the order of disjunction and difference” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B35">Pacheco, 2015</xref>, p. 31). On this logic, love is not essentially safe - like the encounter, it “cannot be theorized or rationalized (…); it belongs to what escapes and should escape every program. We are there, and something breaks in. The presence of the other does not leave us at peace” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Cifali, 1999</xref>, p. 145). Love on the “scene of Two” does not cower before the vagaries of desire, nor does it seek to pervert Two into One by chasing completeness. To abolish lack would be to sign love’s death warrant as a motor for life - for the ego and for the other.</p>
				<p>The “scene of Two” envisions a love that accepts difference; that lets (it) desire; that sets words in motion; and that makes room for bodies, experiences, and dreams. This is another logic of love, one that allows us to see that beyond narcissistic and fraternal forms there is an amour-manqué - a love that, thankfully, fails to meet our usual expectations of it. For such a love - capable of fostering an ethics of desire in relations between subjects - to take root in the social bond, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B37">Siqueira (2014</xref>) argues that we must:</p>
				<disp-quote>
					<p>Introduce lack at the heart of the question of love. In other words, we must curb the excess of narcissistic plenitude that blocks the emergence of a desiring condition, owing to egotistic hypertrophy, and we must also minimize the reciprocity expected between subjects in love (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B37">Siqueira, 2014</xref>, p. 8).</p>
				</disp-quote>
				<p>In the field of love as in psychoanalysis, no promise of completeness can be made, regardless of how it is dressed up, on pain of narrowing the gap of desire until life is doomed to homogenization. The result is the impoverishment of singularity and of the social bond, through a desertification of the modes of being available in the world.</p>
				<p>We contend that this logic of fallible love - amour-manqué - grounded in the Symbolic and the Real, appears as a new form of discourse, counter to religious discourse, opening possibilities for inventing the social bond: “love, in this text, is the sign-so designated - that another reason is at stake (…) We change reasons, which is to say: we change discourse” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Lacan, 1985</xref>, p. 23). To that end, we must be rid of narcissistic impasses that condemn love to the mirror relation and to unconditional reciprocity. Only then can another logic of love emerge, against the injunction “love thy neighbor as thyself,” and in favor of each person’s engagement in the unending task of sustaining a more plural and ethical social bond.</p>
				<p>Given all this, it is no exaggeration to say that psychoanalysis promotes and safeguards a rationality of ethics that makes room for alterity, the premise underlying every relation oriented to desire. This condemns us to be affected by everything our lacking condition implies. Against the strong egoism we erect as protection from the impossibles of the malaise that structures us, we must begin to love: “after all, one must begin to love in order not to fall ill, and one inevitably falls ill when, owing to frustration, one cannot love” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Freud, 1914/2010b</xref>, p. 29). Only then can love function as an ethics for the social bond and for the subject’s singularity - operating as a way of making do with fundamental helplessness and with the conflicts of difference that mark our humanity.</p>
			</sec>
			<sec sec-type="conclusions">
				<title>Final Considerations</title>
				<p>This work does not aim to delegitimize love or religion. It seeks, through psychoanalysis, to reflect critically on these two human phenomena by analyzing their incidence in today’s social bond. Religion and its complexity within human experience must remain objects of study and reflection. We have tried to show that love - socially recognized as a salvific sentiment - has limits with respect to the expectations we place on it, and that in the social field it may take different forms, each with consequences for the subject and for the social bond.</p>
				<p>Drawing on clinical, cinematic, and literary vignettes, we have reflected on the problems embedded in religious discourse, especially where it results in unrestrained violence against the other, against difference, and against the plurality of persons and cultures. In Why War? - a 1932 letter to Einstein - <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Freud (1932/2010d)</xref> warns that war cannot be abolished; still, he insists that everything that works in favor of culture helps to avoid war. In the terms that structure this study, to work in favor of cultivating plurality in human experience is to prevent religion from mooring itself in the world “as if it were an anchor thrown into a wellspring of meaning - of meaning for existence, for life with alterity, for the relation of dependence and ambivalence one bears toward others” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Binkowski et al., 2018</xref>, p. 117). To insist on this is to resist casting religion as a warlike element.</p>
				<p>As for religion, each person should be free to draw on beliefs that serve as a private resource for calming anxiety in the face of fundamental human helplessness. Religious premises should never become the law of the human world, because - as psychoanalysis warns - when religion is the Law, there is no law to which religion is subject.</p>
				<p>As for love, may it exist in its most fallible version - one understood through the registers of the Symbolic and the Real - instances that foster each subject’s engagement in the endless task of safeguarding a plural, non-totalitarian social bond, precisely because such love keeps the gap of desire open.</p>
				<p>By recognizing that no one escapes a condition of incompleteness, we can enter a desiring condition that allows us to move toward the other and forge bonds grounded in an ethical relation between subjects. In this sense, the experience of amour-manqué entails never losing sight of this: a claim to a love that makes one desire must be matched by the will that there be love and desire for the other as well.</p>
