				<title>Resumo</title>
				<p>O presente trabalho tem por ponto de partida a investigação das vicissitudes da pulsão de morte na obra de Sándor Ferenczi. Toma-se, para tal, o que se entende como quatro eixos fundamentais do conceito na proposta original freudiana, quais sejam: o retorno ao inorgânico; a compulsão à repetição; a pulsão de destruição; e o trauma. Nesse sentido, a ideia ferencziana da tendência geral de retorno ao útero; a valorização da repetição, sobretudo no âmbito da clínica; a subordinação das manifestações destrutivas do sujeito à ação, em primeiro lugar, dos objetos; e a proposição do trauma como um fenômeno relacional são fatores que permitem situar o ambiente como o protagonista para Ferenczi. Embora o autor húngaro jamais tenha negado explicitamente a pulsão de morte, compreende-se que o conceito assume papel de coadjuvante no seu pensamento, cujo pioneirismo abriu caminho decididamente para a psicanálise da intersubjetividade e das relações objetais.</p>

				<p>Ce travail a pour point de départ l’enquête sur les vicissitudes de la pulsion de mort dans l’œuvre de Sándor Ferenczi. Pour cela, nous nous appuyons sur les quatre axes fondamentaux du concept dans la proposition freudienne originale : le retour à l’inorganique ; la contrainte à la répétition ; la pulsion de destruction ; et le traumatisme. En ce sens, l’idée de Ferenczi concernant la tendance générale à retourner dans l’utérus ; la valorisation de la répétition surtout dans le contexte clinique ; la subordination des manifestations destructrices du sujet à l’action, tout d’abord, des objets ; et la proposition du traumatisme comme phénomène relationnel permettent de considérer l’environnement comme un protagoniste pour Ferenczi. Bien que l’auteur hongrois n’ait jamais explicitement nié la pulsion de mort, il est entendu que ce concept joue un rôle de soutien dans sa pensée. Ses travaux pionniers ont ouvert la voie à la psychanalyse de l’intersubjectivité et des relations d’objet.</p>

	<body>
		<p>A psicanálise, é sabido, foi criada por Sigmund Freud, na passagem do século XIX para o século XX. Trata-se, portanto, de uma disciplina jovem e ligada de maneira particularmente idiossincrática ao homem que a fundou. Conceitos como inconsciente, pulsão e transferência foram, se não inventados, certamente popularizados por Freud, e até hoje permeiam as publicações psicanalíticas. Nem tudo que o autor austríaco propôs, no entanto, foi aceito de forma unívoca. Naturalmente, as rupturas com C. G. Jung, J. Breuer, A. Adler, O. Rank, W. Reich e outros exemplificam essas divergências. Mas as divergências se verificaram, também, no interior da psicanálise, entre aqueles que nela permaneceram. Desse modo, a pulsão de morte é um elemento que dá testemunho das controvérsias internas vigentes até hoje.</p>
		<p>De saída, parece pertinente dizer que este conceito nos parece multifacetado. Freud o apresentou em Além do Princípio do Prazer (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">Freud, 1920/2017e</xref>), mas o fez de maneira hesitante, em meio a dúvidas explícitas. A reação da comunidade psicanalítica tampouco foi de acolhimento total. Ainda hoje, há posicionamentos diversos, entre a adesão e a rejeição da pulsão de morte. Há também quem trabalhe o conceito segundo paradigmas diversos - como substrato inato da agressividade humana, pulsão sem representação ou reação a falhas ambientais, por exemplo. Exploraremos, sobretudo, esta última possibilidade ao longo deste trabalho, por meio de um autor cuja postura em relação à pulsão de morte até hoje dá margem para discussões.</p>
		<p>Sándor Ferenczi (1873-1933) foi um psicanalista húngaro contemporâneo de Freud, e um dos principais colaboradores do autor austríaco. A rigor, a palavra “colaborador” não é inteiramente adequada. Após terem se conhecido em 1908, Freud e Ferenczi desenvolveram uma relação estreita, dividindo a alta cúpula da Internacional de Psicanálise, viajando juntos e trocando uma vasta correspondência (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Avello &amp; Candioti, 1998</xref>). Tornaram-se amigos, como denota <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Balint (1968/2011b)</xref>. Ao mesmo tempo, é digno de nota que o criador da psicanálise tenha ocupado, simultaneamente, uma posição de mestre de Ferenczi, tendo sido, inclusive, seu analista. Por fim, analista e analisando, mestre e aprendiz divergiram quando Ferenczi tomou, a partir de meados da década de 1920, rumos teóricos e técnicos que, se não provocaram um rompimento franco, decerto desagradaram a Freud (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Balint, 1967/2011a</xref>).</p>
		<p>A pulsão de morte, nesse sentido, ocupa um lugar interessante. Se Freud apresentou e consagrou o conceito, Ferenczi teve, a respeito de Tânatos, uma postura tão ambígua e nuançada quanto a sua relação com o criador da psicanálise. O autor húngaro nunca negou abertamente o conceito em textos publicados em vida, referenciando-o em mais de uma oportunidade. Ao mesmo tempo, o fez frequentemente subordinando-o às influências do ambiente, como ocorreu, progressivamente, com tantos outros aspectos da sua teoria e técnica, sobretudo na parte derradeira da sua obra “oficial”. É, no entanto, na porção “não oficial” - isto é, nos textos publicados de maneira póstuma -, que se vê as maiores evidências do distanciamento ferencziano da pulsão de morte e de como esta ocupa não mais que um lugar de coadjuvante em seu pensamento. Exploraremos, ao longo do presente trabalho, alguns pormenores e desdobramentos dessas concepções.</p>

			<title>O Retorno ao Útero como Alternativa ao Retorno ao Inorgânico</title>
			<p>Em Além do Princípio do Prazer (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">Freud, 1920/2017e</xref>), Freud partiu do princípio de inércia que postulara no <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B23">Projeto para uma Psicologia Científica (1950 [1895]/2006</xref>) para propor o princípio do Nirvana: uma tendência universal nos seres vivos de retorno ao estado inanimado, inorgânico que precedeu sua existência. Tendência à qual corresponderia à pulsão de morte. Na obra de Ferenczi, similarmente, existe a proposição de um retorno a um estado de organização mais primitivo, homeostático, livre das frustrações e dos sofrimentos da vida. Esse estado, no entanto, não é a morte: é a vida dentro do útero materno.</p>
			<p>Essa ideia aparece em O Desenvolvimento do Sentido de Realidade e Seus Estágios<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">(Ferenczi, 1913/2011c</xref>). A preocupação de Ferenczi, à época, consistia em esmiuçar os diferentes estágios que o indivíduo percorre, na passagem do domínio do princípio do prazer ao estabelecimento do princípio (ou sentido) de realidade, apenas aludidas, mas não definidas por Freud em <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B25">Formulações Sobre os Dois Princípios de Funcionamento Psíquico (1911/2017b)</xref>. Para o autor húngaro, haveria, no início da vida, um período de “onipotência incondicional”, que diria menos respeito ao sentimento, por parte do bebê, de que este é criador dos objetos do mundo externo e mais a um “estado de repouso”, onde se poderia viver sem o acossamento por parte de estímulos externos (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B35">Molin et al., 2019</xref>). O recém-nascido seria ainda incapaz de diferenciar a si mesmo do mundo que o circunda, e de compreender que o atendimento das suas demandas depende, fundamentalmente, de outrem. Mas a origem e a explicação desse estado de coisas derivariam de uma realidade ainda mais primitiva:</p>
			<disp-quote>
				<p>(...) existe um estado do desenvolvimento humano que realiza esse ideal de um [ser] submetido unicamente ao prazer e não só na imaginação e de maneira aproximada, mas na realidade e de modo efetivo.</p>
			</disp-quote>
			<disp-quote>
				<p>Refiro-me ao período da vida passado no corpo da mãe. Nesse estágio, o ser humano vive como parasita do corpo materno. Para o ser nascente mal existe o “mundo externo”; todos os seus desejos de proteção, de calor e de alimento estão assegurados pela mãe. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Ferenczi, 1913/2011c</xref>, p. 48)</p>
			</disp-quote>
			<p>Com o nascimento, o mundo externo finalmente faz sentir sua presença contrastante com a homeostase intrauterina. Isso leva o indivíduo, “nada encantado com a brutal perturbação ocorrida na quietude isenta de desejos de que desfrutava no seio materno” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Ferenczi, 1913/2011c, p. 49</xref>), a desejar, “com todas as suas forças, reencontrar-se nessa situação”.</p>
			<p>Essas ideias tiveram desenvolvimentos significativos 11 anos depois, em <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Thalassa: Ensaio sobre a Teoria da Genitalidade (Ferenczi, 1924/2011e)</xref>, outro trabalho que Ferenczi escreveu, após uma longa “gestação” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B35">Molin et al., 2019</xref>, p. 238), com o intuito de ampliar conceitos freudianos. Dessa vez, o mote foi o desenvolvimento psicossexual que Freud apresentara nos <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Três Ensaios Sobre a Teoria da Sexualidade (Freud, 1905/2017a</xref>). Munido da hipótese da universalidade da tendência de retorno ao útero, Ferenczi propôs uma releitura das diferentes fases da sexualidade infantil, enxergando-as “como uma série de tentativas, no início hesitantes e rudimentares, depois cada vez mais explícitas, para retornar ao seio materno” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 294).</p>
			<p>Segundo essa nova proposta, no momento inicial da vida caberia “às pessoas que cuidam da criança manterem para ela a ilusão da situação intrauterina” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 294), ocupando-se das “condições de calor, de obscuridade e de calma de que a criança precisa para conservar tal ilusão”. Desse modo, durante a etapa oral-erótica, a criança seria “em suma, um ectoparasito da mãe, assim como tinha sido seu endoparasito durante o período fetal” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 295). Ferenczi também caracteriza este estágio pelo nome de amor objetal passivo, conceito que ganharia repercussão posterior em sua obra - e é de relevância para as explorações que pretendemos conduzir.</p>
			<p>O momento imediatamente posterior à fase oral-erótica seria a etapa oral canibalesca, marcada, fundamentalmente, pelo desenvolvimento dos dentes - “instrumentos com a ajuda dos quais a criança procura penetrar no corpo da mãe” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 295). Ademais, Ferenczi denota a “identidade simbólica entre o pênis e o dente” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 295) - dois instrumentos de penetração por meio dos quais, em momentos distintos da vida, o indivíduo buscaria consumar seu desejo de retornar ao ambiente intrauterino. Aqui nota-se um privilégio - já muito presente em Freud - da perspectiva daqueles que, ora, possuem pênis: os homens. O autor húngaro, é verdade, comentou brevemente a sexualidade feminina ainda em “Thalassa”. Mas ele próprio também se recriminou, em notas de The Clinical Diary of Sándor Ferenczi (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Ferenczi, 1985 [1932]/1995</xref>), publicadas postumamente, pela maneira como o fez, próxima “demais das palavras do mestre; uma nova edição significaria uma reescritura completa” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Ferenczi, 1985 [1932]/1995</xref>, p. 187).</p>
			<p>A terceira etapa do desenvolvimento que estamos acompanhando consiste na organização sádico-anal. Aqui, haveria o “deslocamento da agressividade, primitivamente ‘canibalesca’, para a função intestinal” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, pp. 295-296), como reação às regras de asseio impostas pelos adultos nesse momento da vida. A ideia dominante é que as fezes seriam identificadas com a própria criança, que se tornaria, portanto, “ao mesmo tempo, a mãe e a criança (conteúdo intestinal)” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 296).</p>
			<p>Em seguida, viria o período de masturbação, “a primeira fase que inicia o primado da zona genital” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 296). Neste momento, “a equação simbólica ‘criança = fezes’ é substituída pelo símbolo ‘criança = pênis’” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 296). Finalmente, o referido primado da genitalidade se consumaria com a configuração de “uma arma ofensiva mais adequada” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 296) para retornar ao útero: o pênis erétil. Nesta fase derradeira, o ato do coito representaria “um retorno - meio fantasiado, meio real - ao seio materno” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 310), na medida em que o indivíduo se identificaria “com o membro viril que penetra na vagina e com os espermatozoides que se derramam no corpo da mulher” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 318).</p>
			<p>Ferenczi classifica, ainda, a etapa oral do desenvolvimento do que denomina “sentido de realidade erótica” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 297) - inspirado, evidentemente, no “sentido de realidade” que postulara anteriormente a respeito do ego - como aloplásticas, ao passo que os períodos anal e masturbatório seriam autoplásticos. A aloplastia voltaria a se verificar apenas no momento final do coito. A ideia é que, na autoplastia, o indivíduo “procura em seu próprio corpo um substituto fantasístico para o objeto perdido” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 297), enquanto a contraparte aloplástica pressupõe uma ação real no meio - nos casos aqui trabalhados, a sucção parasitária e as tentativas de penetração no corpo materno via dentes e pênis. Essas postulações sobre possibilidades de agir no ambiente em oposição a uma transformação de si mesmo também ganhariam relevo na teorização ulterior do trauma.</p>
			<p>“Thalassa” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>) é um texto vasto, repleto de proposições. Ferenczi estabelece, por exemplo, um paralelo entre desenvolvimentos na história do indivíduo - na ontogênese, portanto - e postulações a respeito da história da espécie - a filogênese. Fala-se, assim, em sucessivas catástrofes - cinco, no total - que seriam reatuadas, a nível ontogenético, por meio de eventos como o nascimento, o referido desenvolvimento do sentido de realidade erótica e o período de latência. Nesse sentido, seria depois da era glacial, correspondente filogenética da latência, que teria ocorrido “o desenvolvimento da civilização como uma reação a essa catástrofe” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, pp. 335-336).</p>
			<p>Mas há um ponto dos textos trabalhados até aqui que nos interessa sobremaneira: “o papel central que a mãe (real ou Thalassica) vai tomando progressivamente” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Avello &amp; Candioti, 1998</xref>, p. 192). Esse protagonismo, ora, ficou evidente em nível teórico em todas as proposições acerca da tendência universal de retorno ao útero. Mas Ferenczi era, sobretudo, um clínico e, como tal, não manteve suas ideias afastadas da sua prática com os pacientes: o autor húngaro deu ênfase crescente ao “papel maternal do analista” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Avello &amp; Candioti, 1998</xref>, p. 192), em um posicionamento significativo nas suas divergências com Freud, que considerou o colega húngaro “o padrinho (godfather) dos transbordamentos de afeto maternal que poderiam levar os jovens analistas para um caminho criticável” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B36">Sabourin, 2011</xref>, p. 8).</p>

			<title>A Repetição a Serviço da Cura</title>
			<p>Em Além do Princípio do Prazer (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">Freud, 1920/2017e</xref>), Freud trabalhou a compulsão à repetição em quatro dimensões fundamentais: os sonhos das neuroses traumáticas; o jogo infantil do fort-da; as afecções de destino; e a transferência no setting analítico. Em nota da compilação póstuma Reflexões Sobre o Trauma (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Ferenczi, 1934 [1931-1932]/2011l</xref>), Ferenczi não apenas concorda com a acepção de que as repetições de vivências traumáticas em sonhos consistem em tentativas de elaboração para além da função onírica de realização de desejo, mas amplia esta ideia, postulando que “todo e qualquer sonho, ainda o mais desagradável, é uma tentativa de levar acontecimentos traumáticos a uma resolução e a um domínio psíquicos melhores” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Ferenczi, 1934 [1931-1932]/2011l</xref>, p. 128). <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B33">Gondar (2013</xref>) explora particularmente essa função traumatolítica dos sonhos no pensamento ferencziano. Em “Thalassa” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>), o autor húngaro compara a tentativa de elaboração dos mecanismos repetitivos nos sonhos traumáticos e do fort-da à função do coito, que representaria a “descarga parcial do ‘efeito de choque’ do trauma de nascimento que ainda não foi liquidado” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, pp. 310-311). Em O Tratamento Psicanalítico do Caráter (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Ferenczi, 1949 [1930]/2011n</xref>), há uma referência a algo aparentemente próximo das neuroses de destino, quando se lê sobre um amigo, “não analisado, que se queixava sem parar de ser perseguido pelo azar” (Ferenczi, 1949 [1930], p. 249), mas que, na realidade, perseguiria o referido azar “com o propósito de se assemelhar, pelo menos no infortúnio, a seu pai, que conhecera um fim trágico” (Ferenczi, 1949 [1930], p. 249). A dimensão da repetição mais premente na obra ferencziana, no entanto, é aquela que se verifica na clínica.</p>
			<p>Em Recordar, Repetir e Elaborar (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Freud, 1914/2017d</xref>), Freud situa a repetição em análise - a reencenação transferencial de vivências antigas do paciente - como algo aquém da verdadeira meta do tratamento: a rememoração. A própria transferência, afinal, vinha sendo tratada pelo autor como uma manifestação de resistência, de modo que “quanto maior a resistência, tanto mais o recordar será substituído pelo atuar (repetir)” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Freud, 1914/2017d</xref>, p. 201). Freud também pontua que o “recordar à maneira antiga, reproduzir no âmbito psíquico, continua sendo a meta a que se apega” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Freud, 1914/2017d</xref>, p. 204).</p>
			<p>Em 1924, Ferenczi publica, em conjunto com Otto Rank, Perspectivas da Psicanálise, onde propõe algo distinto: que as repetições em análise são “o verdadeiro material inconsciente” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Ferenczi, 1924/2011d</xref>, p. 245). Ao que se segue que “na técnica analítica, o papel principal parece, portanto, caber à repetição e não à rememoração” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Ferenczi, 1924/2011d</xref>, p. 246). Isso não quer dizer que a rememoração deixa de ter lugar. Esclarece-se que “essa repetição consiste (...) em permitir esses afetos para depois liquidá-los progressivamente, ou ainda em transformar elementos repetidos em lembrança atual” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Ferenczi, 1924/2011d</xref>, p. 246). Mas há uma ênfase evidente na necessidade de “apreciar em seu justo valor a importância primordial da compulsão à repetição” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Ferenczi, 1924/2011d</xref>, p. 246).</p>
			<p>À época dessas proposições, Ferenczi encontrava-se ainda no período de experimentação com a técnica ativa - uma radicalização dos princípios freudianos de frustração e abstinência. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B34">Laplanche e Pontalis (2016</xref>), nos ajudam a compreender o uso dessas ferramentas.</p>
			<disp-quote>
				<p>De um ponto de vista técnico, a ideia de que a neurose encontra a sua condição na Versagung serve de base à regra de abstinência; convém recusar ao paciente as satisfações substitutivas que poderiam apaziguar a sua exigência libidinal: o analista deve manter a frustração. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B34">Laplanche &amp; Pontalis, 2016</xref>, p. 204)</p>
			</disp-quote>
			<p>Mas as ideias gestadas em Perspectivas da Psicanálise (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Ferenczi, 1924/2011d</xref>) seriam em seguida desenvolvidas por Ferenczi na contramão da técnica ativa, que seria abandonada em trabalhos subsequentes. Em Elasticidade da Técnica Psicanalítica (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Ferenczi, 1928/2011g</xref>), lê-se: “nada de mais nocivo em análise do que uma atitude de professor ou mesmo de médico autoritário” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Ferenczi, 1928/2011g</xref>, p. 36). Em Princípio de Relaxamento e Neocatarse (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Ferenczi, 1930/2011i</xref>, p. 65), o autor critica os próprios “excessos” de outrora, denotando que estes podem colocar “o paciente em confronto com dificuldades inúteis e evitáveis; devem existir meios de tornar perceptível ao paciente a nossa atitude amistosamente benevolente” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Ferenczi, 1930/2011i</xref>, p. 69). O mea culpa prossegue em Análises de Crianças com Adultos (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Ferenczi, 1931/2011j</xref>, p. 82), onde se lê: “a expectativa fria e muda, assim como a ausência de reação do analista, pareciam então, com frequência, agir no sentido de uma perturbação da liberdade de associação”. Ferenczi passa a pensar, portanto, os afetos e atitudes também do lado do analista: a contratransferência. O que leva ao questionamento de práticas como a atribuição de fracassos terapêuticos às resistências dos analisandos: “não será antes o nosso próprio conforto que desdenha adaptar-se às particularidades da pessoa, no plano do método?” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Ferenczi, 1931/2011j</xref>, p. 81).</p>
			<p>Essa autoridade do analista, repleta de frieza, mudez, desdém, ausência de reação - de “hipocrisia profissional” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 113) - só pode ter uma consequência: a repetição dos eventos que levaram o paciente ao próprio adoecimento que ele agora busca tratar.</p>
			<disp-quote>
				<p>(…) o paciente vê a reserva severa e fria do analista como a continuação da luta infantil contra a autoridade dos adultos, e que repete agora as reações caracteriais e sintomáticas que estiveram na base de sua neurose propriamente dita. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Ferenczi, 1930/2011i, p. 70</xref>)</p>
			</disp-quote>
			<p>Mas vimos como Ferenczi valorizou, a partir de 1924, a repetição em análise. Evidentemente, a proposta não consistia na atuação idêntica da situação original, patogênica. Consistia, isso sim, na reencenação inevitável de “estados de transe” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Ferenczi, 1930/2011i</xref>, p. 72), nos quais “fragmentos do passado eram revividos, e a pessoa do médico era então a única ponte entre o paciente e a realidade”. Consistia, portanto, em uma repetição terapêutica, que mereceu o nome de neocatarse, em referência às experiências de Freud e Breuer com o método catártico, no período que precedeu a criação da psicanálise. Mas não por isso idêntica a essa proposta primitiva, que o autor húngaro resituou sob a alcunha paleocatarse.</p>
			<p>A diferença fundamental entre a repetição que Ferenczi condena, ao abandonar a técnica ativa, e a que propõe, no contexto da neocatarse, estaria na postura do analista. Se a atitude hipócrita deste engendra repetições da situação que provocou, originalmente, o adoecimento, há de ser algo diferente que permitirá reproduções (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Avello &amp; Candioti, 1998</xref>) com fins curativos. Ferenczi fala, então, em um relaxamento, um “laisser-faire” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Ferenczi, 1930/2011i</xref>, p. 68) em análise, em oposição direta à rigidez dos princípios de frustração e de abstinência. Desse modo, o paciente, “impressionado com o nosso comportamento, contrastante com os eventos vividos em sua própria família, e, como se sabe agora protegido da repetição, atrever-se-á a mergulhar na reprodução do passado desagradável” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Ferenczi, 1931/2011j</xref>, p. 85). Mas como obter esse contraste a nível do comportamento? Ferenczi cita “uma paciência, uma compreensão, uma benevolência e uma amabilidade quase ilimitadas” (p. 85) por parte do analista. Escreve, ainda, que “a única pretensão alimentada pela análise é a da confiança na franqueza e na sinceridade do médico” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Ferenczi, 1928/2011g</xref>, p. 37). Define, por fim, um componente fundamental: o tato - “a faculdade de ‘sentir com’” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Ferenczi, 1928/2011g</xref>, p. 31) - daquele que, afinal, ocupa a posição de autoridade na relação analítica.</p>
			<disp-quote>
				<p>Adquiri a convicção de que se trata, antes de tudo, de uma questão de tato psicológico, de saber quando e como se comunica alguma coisa ao analisando, quando se pode declarar que o material fornecido é suficiente para extrair dele certas conclusões; em que forma a comunicação deve ser, em cada caso apresentada; como se pode reagir a uma reação inesperada ou desconcertante do paciente; quando se deve calar e aguardar outras associações; e em que momento o silêncio é uma tortura inútil para o paciente, etc. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Ferenczi, 1928/2011g</xref>, p. 31)</p>
			</disp-quote>
			<p>Desde <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B26">Freud (1913/2017c)</xref>, é verdade, o timing das intervenções do analista é proposto como algo a ser levado em conta. Mas compreendemos que Ferenczi está ressaltando, na passagem acima, algo que vai além disto. O ponto fundamental é que o analista, para o autor húngaro, deve colocar-se “no diapasão do doente” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Ferenczi, 1928/2011i</xref>, p. 42), adaptando-se, tanto quanto possível e desejável em cada caso, às questões singulares que emergem. Busca-se, assim, construir uma “atmosfera de confiança” (Ferenczi, 1932/1985, p. 170) em análise, que representará, de fato, o contraste com o passado traumático, e poderá servir de meio para a cura que se pretende empreender.</p>
			<p>Flagramo-nos, aqui, pouco falando da pulsão de morte, nosso objeto de estudo no presente trabalho. Na clínica freudiana, o conceito revela-se particularmente útil enquanto representante teórico de fenômenos clínicos diversos, como, por exemplo, a reação terapêutica negativa (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Freud, 1923/2017f</xref>). Mais do que isso, Tânatos é útil porque é algo do sujeito, porém, de certa forma, algo desconhecido, alheio, incontrolável para esse próprio sujeito. De modo que cabe ao analista, que assiste às manifestações da pulsão de morte de uma posição privilegiada, descobri-la, identificá-la e revelá-la ao analisando, por meio das intepretações. Na clínica ferencziana do laissez-faire, também há interpretações, evidentemente; mas o que está em jogo é menos o desvelamento do conflito pulsional que o paciente narra a partir de suas rememorações, e mais a revivescência de estados afetivos primitivos em um setting acolhedor e curativo.</p>
			<p>O papel da mãe, reiteremos, adquire importância decisiva no pensamento de Ferenczi - em nível teórico, com a proposta da tendência universal de retorno ao útero, e técnico, com ideias como as de benevolência e tato do analista. Igualmente importante torna-se a noção de repetição - em particular, de reproduções terapêuticas, que representariam um contraste com as situações patogênicas originais. Tudo isso aponta para ainda mais um horizonte fundamental: o protagonismo do ambiente, tanto capaz de produzir sofrimento, quanto cura.</p>

			<title>A Destruição Vinculada ao Ambiente</title>
			<p>Em A Criança Mal Acolhida e Sua Pulsão de Morte (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Ferenczi, 1929/2011h</xref>, pp. 56-57), Ferenczi se debruça sobre o tema de pacientes com “tendências inconscientes de autodestruição”; “tendências suicidas”; toda uma gama de pessoas “quase isenta das inibições da vontade de viver”; sem “gosto pela vida”. Sabemos que Freud atribuiu, em trabalhos como O Mal-Estar na Civilização (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Freud, 1930/2017h</xref>), a destrutividade do ser humano contra si e contra outrem a uma pulsão de morte inata. Desde textos como O Problema Econômico do Masoquismo (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">Freud, 1924/2017g</xref>), o autor austríaco pensava que, no início da vida, Tânatos é expulso do seu amálgama primordial com Eros em direção ao mundo externo, onde se manifesta como pulsão de destruição. Para Ferenczi (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Ferenczi, 1929/2011h</xref>), o elemento mortífero advém, aqui, do fato de que os indivíduos em questão foram, originalmente, crianças mal acolhidas em suas famílias.</p>
			<disp-quote>
				<p>Eu queria apenas indicar a probabilidade do fato de que crianças acolhidas com rudeza e sem carinho morrem facilmente e de bom grado. Ou utilizam um dos numerosos meios orgânicos para desaparecer rapidamente ou, se escapam a esse destino, conservarão um certo pessimismo e aversão à vida. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Ferenczi, 1929/2011h</xref>, p. 58)</p>
			</disp-quote>
			<p>O autor húngaro propõe, então, uma predominância da pulsão de morte no início da vida. E conclui que é necessário que haja uma forte influência de um ambiente positivo, acolhedor, amoroso, para possibilitar o bom desenvolvimento do indivíduo nesse cenário, a princípio, pouco promissor.</p>
			<disp-quote>
				<p>Fascinados pelo impressionante impulso de crescimento, no começo da vida, tendia-se a pensar que nos indivíduos que acabam de ser postos no mundo as pulsões de vida seriam largamente preponderantes; em geral, tendia-se a representar as pulsões de morte e de vida como simples séries complementares, em que o máximo da vida devia corresponder ao começo da vida e o ponto zero da pulsão de vida à fase de idade avançada. Parece, porém, que as coisas não se passam exatamente assim. De qualquer modo, no início da vida, intra e extrauterina, os órgãos e suas funções desenvolvem-se com uma abundância e uma rapidez surpreendentes - mas só em condições particularmente favoráveis de proteção do embrião e da criança. A criança deve ser levada, por um prodigioso dispêndio de amor, de ternura e de cuidados, a perdoar aos pais por terem-na posto no mundo sem lhe perguntar qual era a sua intenção, pois, caso contrário, as pulsões de destruição logo entram em ação. E, no fundo, não há motivos de espanto, uma vez que o bebê, ao contrário do adulto, ainda se encontra muito mais perto do não ser individual, do qual não foi afastado pela experiência da vida. Deslizar de novo para esse não ser poderia, portanto, nas crianças, acontecer de um modo muito mais fácil. A “força vital” que resiste às dificuldades da vida não é, portanto, muito forte no nascimento; segundo parece, ela só se reforça após a imunização progressiva conta os atentados físicos e psíquicos por meio de um tratamento e de uma educação conduzidos com tato. De acordo com o declínio da curva de morbidez e de mortalidade da meia-idade, a pulsão de vida poderia, na maturidade contrabalançar as tendências para a autodestruição. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Ferenczi, 1929/2011h</xref>, p. 58)</p>
			</disp-quote>
			<p>Uma ideia semelhante já aparecera em O Desenvolvimento do Sentido de Realidade e Seus Estágios (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Ferenczi, 1913/2011c</xref>, p. 60), onde uma nota de rodapé assinala que “uma tendência para a inércia ou para a regressão, dominando a própria vida orgânica”. De modo que “a tendência para a evolução, para a adaptação, etc. dependeria, pelo contrário, unicamente de estímulos externos”.</p>
			<p>Também em O Problema da Afirmação do Desprazer (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Ferenczi, 1926/2011f</xref>, p. 439), fala-se em “organismos primitivos” que “encontram-se ainda tão próximos do ponto de emergência para fora do inorgânico que sua pulsão de destruição tem muito menos caminho a percorrer para a ele retornar e mostra-se, portanto, muito mais eficaz”. No mesmo trabalho, Ferenczi expõe ideias a respeito de um “objeto incômodo” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Ferenczi, 1926/2011f</xref>, p. 436), e dos efeitos deste no sentido, exatamente, do desencadeamento de tendências mortíferas.</p>
			<disp-quote>
				<p>O aparecimento desse obstáculo acarretou um desintrincamento de suas pulsões sob o crescendo do componente agressivo e destrutivo; após a satisfação obtida pela vingança, o outro componente pulsional, o amor, também procura a satisfação. Tudo se passa como se as duas espécies de pulsões se neutralizassem mutuamente quando o ego se encontra em estado de repouso, à maneira da eletricidade negativa e positiva num corpo elétrico inerte e como se nos dois casos influências externas particulares fossem necessárias para separar as duas espécies de correntes e torná-las de novo ativas. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Ferenczi, 1926/2011f</xref>, pp. 436-437)</p>
			</disp-quote>
			<p>Tudo isso aponta, enfim, para a influência decisiva do ambiente. É o ambiente, afinal, que pode inibir as tendências destrutivas do início da vida rumo a um desenvolvimento saudável. E é também o ambiente que pode, ao acolher mal o indivíduo, promover um desintrincamento pulsional liberador de mecanismos mortíferos duradouros, como os sentimentos de que a vida não vale “a pena ser vivida” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Ferenczi, 1929/2011h</xref>, p. 56).</p>
			<p>Retornemos, agora, a proposições mais precoces de Ferenczi. Em O Conceito de Introjeção (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">Ferenczi, 1912/2011b</xref>, p. 209), o autor define o mecanismo de introjeção como “a extensão ao mundo externo do interesse, autoerótico na origem, pela introdução dos objetos externos na esfera do ego” e o contrapõe à projeção. Há, nesse texto bem como em Transferência e Introjeção (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">Ferenczi, 1909/2011a</xref>) e O Desenvolvimento do Sentido de Realidade e Seus Estágios (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Ferenczi, 1913/2011c</xref>), também a ideia de que a introjeção predomina no período inicial da vida - a etapa da onipotência, regida pelo princípio do prazer -, enquanto a contraparte projetiva caracterizaria um momento posterior, do reconhecimento e desenvolvimento de uma relação com o mundo externo: o sentido de realidade.</p>
			<p>Já ressaltamos como, para Freud, a pulsão de morte advém do interior, antes de encontrar seu caminho rumo ao mundo externo. Pois, segundo essa proposta, as interdições à satisfação da pulsão de destruição em relação aos objetos fariam com que Tânatos, eventualmente, retornasse ao mundo interior, sob a forma do superego, ou masoquismo moral (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">Freud, 1924/2017g</xref>). A pulsão de morte freudiana emana, portanto, do intrapsíquico, e a ele retorna.</p>
			<p>Novamente preconizando a importância do ambiente, Ferenczi apresenta noções como a de introjeção do agressor<xref ref-type="fn" rid="fn1">1</xref>. Essa alternativa dá conta de que pessoas sujeitas a situações extremas de violência e medo podem “submeter-se automaticamente à vontade do agressor, a adivinhar o menor de seus desejos, a obedecer esquecendo-se de si mesmas, e a identificar-se totalmente com o agressor” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 117). Mas os objetos maus internalizados dessa forma não se integram bem ao ego, comportando-se como “transplantes cindidos, estranhos” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Ferenczi, 1985 [1932]/1995</xref>, p. 81), que podem dar origem a comportamentos semelhantes à conduta das pessoas de onde provieram. Ou seja, configura-se “um agredido que, identificado com o agressor, utiliza seu mesmo mecanismo” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Avello, 2006</xref>, p. 159). Ferenczi deriva daí noções de modalidades - patológicas, segundo entendemos - de superego. Em The Clinical Diary (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Ferenczi, 1985 [1932]/1995</xref>), fala-se em ‘“superego’ louco” (p. 50), e “superego mau” (p. 77); em outra nota póstuma, há uma menção a um “’superego’ não assimilado” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Dupont, 1998</xref>, p. 78); finalmente, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Avello (2006</xref>, p. 169) trata de um “superego feroz”. Corpos estranhos, enfim, produzidos a partir de uma ação vinda do exterior - e não, como quis Freud, substrato pulsional destrutivo inerente ao sujeito.</p>

		<sec>
			<title>O Trauma</title>
			<p>As agressões supracitadas; as situações a serem repetidas (ou reproduzidas) a partir do relaxamento em análise; e a postura do analista diante dessas repetições, repleta de sinceridade e tato, em contraste com o cenário patogênico original, remetem a um conceito específico, que ocupou posição central no pensamento e na prática de Ferenczi nos anos finais de sua vida: o trauma.</p>
			<p>Se retornamos mais uma vez a Freud, notamos como o trauma esteve longamente ausente da sua obra até reaparecer a partir do confrontamento com os sonhos das neuroses traumáticas em Além do Princípio do Prazer (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">Freud, 1920/2017e</xref>). Nesse momento, no entanto, o que se apresentou foi uma perspectiva pulsional - de um traumatismo que consiste na inundação do psiquismo por excitações destrutivas, desorganizadoras. Não se valorizou os eventos reais a partir dos quais as referidas excitações podem ter sido liberadas. Mas nem sempre foi assim: à época da aplicação do método catártico - a paleocatarse a que Ferenczi se refere em Princípio de Relaxamento (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Ferenczi, 1930/2011i</xref>) -, a etiologia traumática das neuroses era um ponto nodal da teoria e prática freudianas. A mudança de perspectiva é marcada pela célebre “carta 69” da correspondência com Fliess, na qual o criador da psicanálise se mostra descrente em relação às histórias de traumas - notadamente, de abusos sexuais infantis por parte do pai - que tão frequentemente escutava de suas pacientes histéricas. De modo que a ênfase se desloca, a partir de uma valorização original de abusos sexuais vividos, rumo às ideias de fantasia, realidade psíquica e do aspecto econômico do funcionamento psíquico (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B34">Laplanche &amp; Pontalis, 2016</xref>).</p>
			<p>O trauma que Ferenczi descreve, evidentemente, é bastante distinto. Já munido dos principais conceitos e ferramentas técnicas que expusemos até aqui, o autor escreve, em Confusão de Língua Entre os Adultos e a Criança (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 116):</p>
			<disp-quote>
				<p>(...) nunca será demais insistir sobre a importância do traumatismo e, em especial, do traumatismo sexual como fator patogênico. Mesmo crianças pertencentes a famílias respeitáveis e de tradição puritana são, com mais frequência do que se ousaria pensar, vítimas de violências e de estupros. São ora os próprios pais que buscam um substituto para suas insatisfações, dessa maneira patológica, ora pessoas de confiança, membros da mesma família (tios, tias, avós), os preceptores ou o pessoal doméstico que abusam da ignorância e da inocência das crianças. A objeção, a saber, que se trataria de fantasias da própria criança perde lamentavelmente sua força, em consequência do número considerável de pacientes, em análise, que confessam ter mantido relações sexuais com crianças.</p>
			</disp-quote>
			<p>Ferenczi propõe que as crianças e os adultos se situam em registros, em línguas distintas: aquelas, no já citado amor objetal passivo, na ternura; estes, na paixão. Dado que o próprio autor, no “Pós-escrito” de Confusão de Língua, admite que “em suspenso ficou o problema da própria essência” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 121) da diferença entre esses registros, recorramos a outros trabalhos para estabelecer a distinção. Ferenczi escreve, em <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">The Clinical Diary (1995)</xref>: “A vida normal então começa exclusivamente com amor objetal passivo. Crianças não amam; elas devem ser amadas” (p. 189). Só depois desse momento inicial viria, então, um estágio de amor objetal, no qual o indivíduo primeiro tomaria a si mesmo por objeto, antes de finalmente destinar seus investimentos amorosos ao mundo externo, como quis Freud. Os adultos, sim, encontram-se no momento derradeiro de amor objetal. </p>
			<p>Mas o conceito de paixão envolve mais do que essa genealogia do desenvolvimento libidinal. Em outra nota de <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">The Clinical Diary, Ferenczi (1985</xref> [1932]/1995, p. 151) escreve: “o homem se torna passional e implacável puramente como consequência do sofrimento”. Sofrimento que se inicia, como vimos, a partir do abandono do útero materno - “um período sem paixão” -, e se atualiza em eventos como “regulação das funções dos órgãos, treinamento de asseio, desmame”, que “tornam qualquer humano mais ou menos passional”. Compreende-se, portanto, que a paixão advém, também, do trauma, cuja importância na constituição do psiquismo é universalizada (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Avello &amp; Candioti, 1998</xref>) por Ferenczi. Mas, assim como existe uma vasta pluralidade de montagens psíquicas, nem todos os traumas são iguais. Debruçar-nos-emos, aqui, sobre a sua modalidade patogênica, desestruturante.</p>
			<p>Voltemos a Confusão de Língua (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>). Tendo estabelecido a realidade empírica do trauma e discorrido sobre a frequência de abusos sexuais infantis, Ferenczi descreve como se dão, tipicamente, esses casos. A ideia é que adultos adoecidos confundem as “brincadeiras infantis com os desejos de uma pessoa que atingiu a maturidade sexual, e deixam-se arrastar para a prática de atos sexuais sem pensar nas consequências” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 116). Esses adultos tomam, portanto, a demanda de amor infantil, passiva, terna, lúdica, por manifestações plenamente genitais, ativas, passionais: assim configura-se a confusão de língua a que alude o título do trabalho em questão. Mas essa não é a única forma de abuso traumático. Outra modalidade descrita são as “medidas punitivas insuportáveis”, também chamadas de “punições passionais” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 119). Nessas, “os delitos que a criança comete, de brincadeira” adquirem “um caráter de realidade” a partir dos castigos impostos por “adultos furiosos, rugindo de cólera”. Finalmente, no “terrorismo do sofrimento” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 120), as crianças “são obrigadas a resolver toda espécie de conflitos familiares, e carregam sobre seus frágeis ombros o fardo de todos os outros membros da família”. Há, nestes casos, uma inversão de papéis, em que aqueles que deveriam ser cuidados tornam-se os cuidadores.</p>
			<p>O resultado imediato de qualquer uma dessas modalidades de ação traumatizante seria, idealmente, uma reação aloplástica por parte da vítima - “uma defesa real contra a nocividade, ou seja, uma transformação do mundo circundante no sentido de um afastamento da causa do distúrbio” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Ferenczi, 1934 [1931-1932]/2011l</xref>, pp. 125-126). Mas a “subitaneidade” dos eventos, a ausência de preparação, decorrente do “sentimento de estar seguro de si” e da “confiança em si e no mundo circundante”, podem impossibilitar tais ações. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Avello (2006</xref>) acrescenta, ainda, a assimetria na relação entre agressor e agredido como um dos pré-requisitos, como parte do “terreno favorável” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Avello, 2006</xref>, p. 143) à instauração do trauma patogênico, na medida em que haja “uma boa relação prévia entre alguém em posição de poder (...) e alguém em posição de submissão e fraqueza”.</p>
			<p>Configura-se, nesse cenário, o choque, a comoção psíquica, que provoca grande angústia e desprazer. Como a aloplastia é impossível, resta uma solução autoplástica: a “autodestruição, a qual, enquanto fator que liberta da angústia, será preferida ao sofrimento mudo” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Ferenczi, 1934 [1931-1932]/2011l</xref>, p. 127). Autodestruição que tem como um dos seus resultados o fato de que “nenhum traço mnêmico subsistirá dessas impressões, mesmo no inconsciente, de sorte que as origens da comoção são inacessíveis pela memória” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Ferenczi, 1934 [1931-1932]/2011l</xref>, p. 130). Daí a importância da neocatarse, que, ao “repetir o próprio traumatismo em condições mais favoráveis” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Ferenczi, 1934 [1931-1932]/2011l</xref>, p. 130), pode fazer com que este seja conduzido, “pela primeira vez, à percepção e à descarga motora”. É também neste tempo do trauma que se dá a identificação com o agressor. Já vimos algumas das repercussões dessa ideia. Notemos, ademais, que o choque promove a incorporação do “sentimento de culpa” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 117) do agressor.</p>
			<p>Mesmo após essas etapas do traumatismo que descrevemos, nem tudo está perdido. A vítima - no exemplo privilegiado, a criança -, aturdida, tende a buscar ajuda de outra pessoa. Mas Ferenczi denota que, “de um modo geral, as relações com uma segunda pessoa de confiança - no exemplo escolhido, a mãe - não são suficientemente íntimas para que a criança possa encontrar uma ajuda junto dela” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 117). Trata-se do desmentido:</p>
			<disp-quote>
				<p>O pior é realmente a negação, a afirmação de que não aconteceu nada, de que não houve sofrimento ou até mesmo ser espancado e repreendido quando se manifesta a paralisia traumática do pensamento ou dos movimentos; é isso, sobretudo, o que torna o traumatismo patogênico. Tem-se mesmo a impressão de que esses choques graves são superados, sem amnésia nem sequelas neuróticas, se a mãe estiver presente, com toda a sua compreensão, sua ternura e, o que é mais raro, uma total sinceridade. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Ferenczi, 1931/2011j</xref>, p. 91)</p>
			</disp-quote>
			<p>É após este último tempo do trauma que se instaura a “autoclivagem narcísica” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Ferenczi, 1949 [1920-1932]/2011m</xref>, p. 290), mecanismo mais radical de cisão da personalidade. O que sucede, então, é que parte do sujeito “regride para uma beatitude pré-traumática, procura tornar o choque inexistente” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 119). Outra parte, por sua vez, amadurece subitamente, à maneira de um “fruto bichado” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 119) - “frutos que ficam maduros e saborosos depressa demais, quando o bico de um pássaro os fere” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 120) -, ou de um “bebê sábio” - um recém-nascido que “põe-se subitamente a falar e até a mostrar sabedoria a toda a família”. Trata-se, neste último caso, da “progressão traumática” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 120), por meio da qual parte do ego torna-se um “anjo da guarda” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Ferenczi, 1934 [1931-1932]/2011l</xref>, p. 134) em relação à porção regredida; uma instância que “vê desde fora a criança que sofre, ou que foi morta (portanto, ele se esgueirou para fora da pessoa durante o processo de ‘fragmentação’), percorre o mundo inteiro em busca de ajuda”.</p>

			<title>Considerações Finais</title>
			<p>Vimos a proposta do retorno ao útero como alternativa à noção de retorno ao inorgânico; notamos a valorização que Ferenczi concede a compulsão à repetição em análise no contexto da neocatarse; exploramos como a agressividade e a destrutividade do sujeito se manifestam a partir do desintrincamento pulsional e da identificação com o agressor; e pudemos conceituar o trauma tanto como mecanismo de constituição do psiquismo quanto como fator patogênico, sempre por um viés relacional. Tratamos, enfim, da maneira particular como o autor húngaro trabalhou os quatro eixos que identificamos como os principais na proposta original da pulsão de morte. Mas há, ainda, ideias ferenczianas que escapam a essa divisão que buscamos fazer, sobretudo em escritos que jamais foram publicados em vida.</p>
			<p>Em uma nota intitulada “Toda adaptação é precedida de uma tentativa inibida de integração”, lê-se que “em vez de ‘pulsão de morte’ seria preferível escolher uma palavra que exprima a completa passividade do processo” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Ferenczi, 1949 [1920-1932]/2011m</xref>, p. 271). Em Reflexões Sobre o Prazer da Passividade, On The Male and Female Principles in Nature e Os Três Princípios Capitais, Ferenczi escreve sobre pulsões egoístas e altruístas, identificando aquelas com as pulsões de vida e estas, com as de morte. Mas acrescenta: “tudo isso representaria apenas uma ligeira modificação da suposição de Freud das pulsões de vida e de morte. Eu daria à mesma coisa outros nomes” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Ferenczi, 1995</xref>, p. 41). Em Contribution to The Phallus Cult, há uma indagação: “a pulsão de morte deveria ser postulada como uma pulsão de bondade e autossacrifício, algo maternal-feminino em oposição ao masculino?” (p. 91</p>
			<p>Divergências mais explícitas aparecem em notas como “Faquirismo”, onde se lê: “Pulsão de morte? Somente morte (damage) do indivíduo” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Ferenczi, 1949 [1920-1932]/2011m</xref>, p. 295). Em A Catalogue of the Sins of Psychoanalysis, Ferenczi pontua que “a ideia da pulsão de morte vai longe demais, e já é tingida de sadismo” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Ferenczi, 1985 [1932]/1995</xref>, p. 200). Mas nenhum texto apresenta uma crítica tão dura à pulsão de morte quanto uma nota diminuta, não datada, que se estima ser de agosto de 1932, e foi publicada mais de 60 anos depois pela herdeira literária de Ferenczi, Judith Dupont. Nela se lê: “Nada além de pulsão de vida. Pulsão de morte, um erro. (Pessimista)” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Dupont, 1998</xref>, p. 82).</p>
			<p>Qual seria, então, a visão definitiva de Ferenczi sobre Tânatos? Essa pergunta, evidentemente, não possui resposta simples. “Oficialmente”, o autor húngaro trabalhou o conceito das formas como buscamos demonstrar ao longo do presente trabalho; e também o omitiu, de forma importante, na sua montagem final sobre o trauma em Confusão de Língua e até mesmo no póstumo Reflexões Sobre o Trauma (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B32">Herzog &amp; Pacheco-Ferreira, 2015</xref>). “Extraoficialmente”, há críticas mais duras e tentativas de reformulação que, lamentavelmente, permaneceram inacabadas. De modo que comentadores, como <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Avello (2006</xref>), sugerem que a pulsão de morte seja desconsiderada do pensamento ferencziano, que estaria em vias de propor uma nova metapsicologia, distinta da de Freud. Já autores como <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B35">Molin et al. (2019</xref>) optam por explorar as perspectivas únicas do autor húngaro sobre Tânatos.</p>
			<p>O fato foi que Ferenczi morreu apenas alguns meses depois da publicação da maioria das notas póstumas que citamos, vítima de uma anemia perniciosa. Nunca saberemos para quais direções o autor levaria as ideias aqui expostas. No escopo do que de fato publicou, ele nunca negou publicamente a pulsão de morte. O que compreendemos é que há, sobretudo na parte derradeira de sua obra - a única em que se podia tratar do conceito, considerando que Freud o cunhou apenas em 1920 - referências crescentes ao fator ambiental, que repercutem também em Tânatos. Ferenczi pensa que essa força destrutiva é, afinal, desencadeada no sujeito por meio da relação com o outro, quando este o acolhe mal, agride, abusa ou traumatiza. E é também esse outro o único capaz de neutralizar a pulsão de morte, cujo potencial seria particularmente grandioso no momento inicial da vida. Seja no seio das relações familiares dos primórdios da vida ou na clínica psicanalítica, o campo das relações sobressai ao pulsional.</p>
			<p>Evidentemente, admite-se haver algo que é do sujeito, para além das influências ambientais. É inquestionável que Eros existe para Ferenczi, e tampouco concordamos com <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Avello (2006</xref>) a respeito de não haver pulsão de morte no pensamento do autor húngaro. Buscamos, ao longo do presente capítulo, demonstrar exatamente o lugar e a especificidade do conceito em relação à proposta freudiana original. Mas na medida em que as influências ambientais, isto é, as relações entre o sujeito e aqueles que o cercam, ganham protagonismo na teoria e clínica ferenczianas, Tânatos - e a pulsão, como um todo - não podem desempenhar mais do que um papel de coadjuvante.</p>
			<p>Tais concepções “abriram para seus sucessores novos caminhos, cuja fecundidade se torna cada vez mais aparente conforme as pesquisas progridem” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Dupont, 1995</xref>, p. 11. Com efeito, Michael Balint, D. W. Winnicott e tantos outros autores seguiram o fecundo caminho daquele que “lançou as bases de uma teoria das relações objetais, foi o primeiro a desenvolver uma teoria intersubjetiva do psiquismo e a considerar o espaço analítico como um campo criado entre duas pessoas” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Avello &amp; Candioti, 1998</xref>, p. 281): Sándor Ferenczi.</p>

				<title>Abstract</title>
				<p>This article examines the vicissitudes of the death drive in Sándor Ferenczi’s work. It takes as its point of departure four pillars of Freud’s original formulation: the return to the inorganic, the compulsion to repeat, the destructive drive, and trauma. In this light, Ferenczi’s ideas - namely, a general tendency to return to the womb; an emphasis on repetition, especially in the clinical setting; the view that the subject’s destructive expressions are subordinated primarily to the action of objects; and the proposition of trauma as a relational phenomenon - allow us to situate the environment as the central protagonist in his theory. Although the Hungarian analyst never explicitly denied the death drive, the concept assumes a supporting role in his thought. Ferenczi’s pioneering work decisively paved the way for an intersubjective and object-relations psychoanalysis.</p>

		<body>
			<p>As is well known, psychoanalysis was created by Sigmund Freud at the turn of the 20th century. It is therefore a young discipline, particularly bound to its founder. Concepts such as the unconscious, drive, and transference were, if not invented, certainly popularized by Freud, and they still permeate psychoanalytic publications today. Not everything the Austrian author proposed, however, was accepted unequivocally. The well-known breaks with C. G. Jung, J. Breuer, A. Adler, O. Rank, W. Reich, and others exemplify these divergences. Disagreements also emerged within psychoanalysis among those who remained inside the field. In this sense, the death drive stands as a witness to enduring internal controversies.</p>
			<p>At the outset, it seems pertinent to say that this concept is multifaceted. Freud introduced it in Beyond the Pleasure Principle (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">Freud, 1920/2017e</xref>), yet he did so hesitantly and with explicit doubts. The psychoanalytic community’s reception was likewise far from unanimous. There remain a range of positions today, from adherence to outright rejection. Some also approach the concept through different paradigms - for example, as an innate substrate of human aggression, as a drive without representation, or as a reaction to environmental failure. In this article, we focus primarily on the last of these, through an author whose stance on the death drive continues to invite debate.</p>
			<p>Sándor Ferenczi (1873-1933) was a Hungarian psychoanalyst, a contemporary of Freud, and one of his main collaborators. Strictly speaking, “collaborator” is not entirely adequate. After meeting in 1908, Freud and Ferenczi developed a close relationship: they shared leadership roles in the International Psychoanalytic movement, traveled together, and exchanged extensive correspondence (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Avello &amp; Candioti, 1998</xref>). They became friends, as <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Balint (1968/2011b)</xref> notes. At the same time, it is worth noting that Freud also occupied the position of Ferenczi’s mentor and was, in fact, his analyst. Ultimately, analyst and analysand - master and apprentice - diverged when, from the mid-1920s on, Ferenczi took theoretical and technical directions that, while not causing a complete break, certainly displeased Freud (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Balint, 1967/2011a</xref>).</p>
			<p>The death drive occupies an especially interesting place. Freud introduced and consolidated the concept; Ferenczi’s stance toward Thanatos was as ambivalent and nuanced as his relationship with psychoanalysis’s founder. In his published writings, the Hungarian author never openly denied the concept and referred to it on more than one occasion. Yet he often subordinated it to environmental influences - something that, progressively, he did with many other aspects of his theory and technique, especially in the final phase of his “official” work. It is, however, in the “unofficial” portion of his oeuvre - namely, the texts published posthumously - that we find the strongest evidence of Ferenczi’s distance from the death drive and of the merely supporting role it plays in his thought. In what follows, we examine some details and ramifications of these views.</p>
			<sec>
				<title>A Return to the Womb as an Alternative to the Return to the Inorganic</title>
				<p>In Beyond the Pleasure Principle (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">Freud, 1920/2017e</xref>), Freud drew on the inertia principle he had posited in <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B23">Project for a Scientific Psychology (1950 [1895]/2006</xref>) to propose the Nirvana principle: a universal tendency in living beings to return to the inanimate, inorganic state that preceded life itself - a tendency that would correspond to the death drive. In Ferenczi’s work, there is a similar proposition of a return to a more primitive, homeostatic organization, free from life’s frustrations and suffering. This state, however, is not death but life within the maternal womb.</p>
				<p>This idea appears in Stages in the Development of the Sense of Reality (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Ferenczi, 1913/2011c</xref>). Ferenczi’s concern at the time was to spell out the stages the individual traverses in moving from the rule of the pleasure principle to the establishment of the reality principle (or sense of reality), only alluded to - but not defined - by Freud in <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B25">Formulations on the Two Principles of Mental Functioning (1911/2017b)</xref>. For Ferenczi, life begins with a period of “unconditional omnipotence,” which has less to do with the infant’s feeling that it creates the objects of the external world and more with a “state of repose,” in which one can live unharried by external stimuli (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B35">Molin et al., 2019</xref>). The newborn is still unable to differentiate itself from its surroundings or to grasp that the satisfaction of its needs fundamentally depends on another. The origin and explanation of this state, however, derive from an even more primitive reality:</p>
				<disp-quote>
					<p>(...) there exists a stage of human development that truly realizes this ideal of a being subject solely to pleasure, and not only in imagination and approximately, but in reality and effectively.</p>
				</disp-quote>
				<disp-quote>
					<p>I am referring to the period of life spent in the mother’s body. At this stage, the human being lives as a parasite of the maternal body. For the nascent being, the “external world” scarcely exists; all desires for protection, warmth, and nourishment are provided by the mother. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Ferenczi, 1913/2011c</xref>, p. 48)</p>
				</disp-quote>
				<p>With birth, the external world finally makes its presence felt, in stark contrast to intrauterine homeostasis. This leads the individual, “hardly delighted with the brutal disturbance of the desireless quiet he had enjoyed in the maternal womb” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Ferenczi, 1913/2011c</xref>, p. 49), to long “with all his strength to find himself once again in that situation.”</p>
				<p>These ideas were developed substantially 11 years later in Thalassa: A Theory of Genitality (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>), another work Ferenczi wrote after a long “gestation” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B35">Molin et al., 2019</xref>, p. 238) with the aim of extending Freudian concepts. This time, the focus was the psychosexual development Freud had presented in Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Freud, 1905/2017a</xref>). Starting from the hypothesis of a universal tendency to return to the womb, Ferenczi reread the phases of infantile sexuality, viewing them “as a series of attempts-first hesitant and rudimentary, then increasingly explicit - to return to the maternal womb” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 294).</p>
				<p>In this new proposal, at the very beginning of life “those who care for the child must maintain for it the illusion of the intrauterine situation” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 294), attending to the “conditions of warmth, darkness, and quiet the child needs to preserve that illusion.” Thus, during the oral-erotic stage the child is “in sum, an ectoparasite of the mother, just as it had been her endoparasite during the fetal period” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 295). Ferenczi also names this stage passive object-love, a concept that would later gain prominence in his work - and is relevant to the lines of inquiry we pursue here.</p>
				<p>Immediately after the oral-erotic phase comes the cannibalistic oral stage, marked primarily by the development of the teeth - “instruments with which the child seeks to penetrate the mother’s body” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 295). Ferenczi further notes the “symbolic identity between the penis and the tooth” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 295) - two instruments of penetration through which, at different moments in life, the individual seeks to consummate the desire to return to the intrauterine environment. Here we see a privileging - already prominent in Freud - of the perspective of those who possess a penis, namely men. It is true that Ferenczi briefly addressed female sexuality in Thalassa. Yet he later reproached himself, in notes from The Clinical Diary of Sándor Ferenczi (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Ferenczi, 1985 [1932]/1995</xref>), published posthumously, for the way he did so, too close “to the master’s words; a new edition would mean a complete rewrite” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Ferenczi, 1985 [1932]/1995</xref>, p. 187).</p>
				<p>The third stage in this developmental sequence is the sadistic-anal organization. Here we see the “displacement of originally ‘cannibalistic’ aggression onto the intestinal function” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, pp. 295-296), as a reaction to the cleanliness rules imposed by adults at this time of life. The dominant idea is that feces are identified with the child itself, who thus becomes “at once the mother and the child (intestinal content)” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 296).</p>
				<p>Next comes the period of masturbation, “the first phase to inaugurate the primacy of the genital zone” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 296). At this moment, “the symbolic equation ‘child = feces’ is replaced by the symbol ‘child = penis’” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 296). Finally, the primacy of genitality is consummated with the emergence of “a more suitable offensive weapon” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 296) for returning to the womb: the erect penis. In this final phase, the sexual act represents “a return - half fantasied, half real - to the maternal womb” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 310), insofar as the individual identifies “with the virile member that penetrates the vagina and with the spermatozoa that pour into the woman’s body” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 318).</p>
				<p>Ferenczi also classifies the oral stage in the development of what he calls the “sense of erotic reality” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 297) - clearly inspired by the earlier “sense of reality” he posited for the ego - as alloplastic, whereas the anal and masturbatory periods would be autoplastic. Alloplasty would reappear only in the final moment of coitus. The idea is that, in autoplasty, the individual “seeks in his own body a phantasmatic substitute for the lost object” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, p. 297), while the alloplastic counterpart entails concrete action on the environment - in the cases under discussion, parasitic sucking and attempts to penetrate the maternal body via teeth and penis. These propositions about acting on the environment as opposed to transforming oneself would also become salient in Ferenczi’s later theorization of trauma.</p>
				<p>Thalassa (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>) is a wide-ranging text, full of propositions. Ferenczi, for instance, draws a parallel between developments in the history of the individual - ontogenesis - and claims about the history of the species - phylogenesis. He describes successive catastrophes - five in all - that would be reenacted, at the ontogenetic level, through events such as birth, the development of the aforementioned sense of erotic reality, and the latency period. In this sense, it would be after the Ice Age - the phylogenetic counterpart of latency - that “the development of civilization occurred as a reaction to this catastrophe” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, pp. 335-336).</p>
				<p>One point in these texts is especially relevant for us: “the central role that the mother (real or Thalassic) progressively takes on” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Avello &amp; Candioti, 1998</xref>, p. 192). This protagonism is evident in theory across all the propositions concerning the universal tendency to return to the womb. But Ferenczi was, above all, a clinician, and he did not keep his ideas separate from his practice: he increasingly emphasized the “maternal role of the analyst” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Avello &amp; Candioti, 1998</xref>, p. 192), a position that figured prominently in his divergences with Freud - who regarded his Hungarian colleague as “the godfather of maternal overflows of affect that could lead young analysts down a questionable path” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B36">Sabourin, 2011</xref>, p. 8).</p>

				<title>Repetition in the Service of Cure</title>
				<p>In Beyond the Pleasure Principle (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">Freud, 1920/2017e</xref>), Freud examines the compulsion to repeat in four key dimensions: dreams in traumatic neuroses; the child’s fort-da game; “fates” or life patterns; and transference in the analytic setting. In a note from the posthumous collection Reflections on Trauma (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Ferenczi, 1934 [1931-1932]/2011l</xref>), Ferenczi not only agrees that repetitions of traumatic experiences in dreams are attempts at working-through that go beyond wish-fulfillment; he also extends the idea by proposing that “every dream whatsoever, even the most unpleasant, is an attempt to bring traumatic events to a better psychic resolution and mastery” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Ferenczi, 1934 [1931-1932]/2011l</xref>, p. 128). <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B33">Gondar (2013</xref>) explores this specifically traumatolytic function of dreams in Ferenczi’s thought. In Thalassa (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>), Ferenczi compares the effort to work through repetitive mechanisms in traumatic dreams and in the fort-da to the function of coitus, which would “partially discharge the ‘shock effect’ of the birth trauma that has not yet been liquidated” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Ferenczi, 1924/2011e</xref>, pp. 310-311). In The Psychoanalytic Treatment of Character (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Ferenczi, 1949 [1930]/2011n</xref>), he refers to something seemingly akin to “fateful” neuroses when he writes about a friend “who had not been analyzed and who constantly complained of being pursued by bad luck” (Ferenczi, 1949 [1930], p. 249), but who in fact sought out that very misfortune “in order to resemble, at least in his misfortune, his father, who met a tragic end” (Ferenczi, 1949 [1930], p. 249). Still, the most salient dimension of repetition in Ferenczi’s work is the one enacted in the clinic.</p>
				<p>In Remembering, Repeating and Working-Through (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Freud, 1914/2017d</xref>), Freud situates repetition in analysis - the transferential re-enactment of the patient’s past - as something short of the true aim of treatment: recollection. Transference itself had been treated as a manifestation of resistance; thus, “the greater the resistance, the more will remembering be replaced by acting (repeating)” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Freud, 1914/2017d</xref>, p. 201). Freud adds that “remembering in the old manner, reproducing it in the psychical sphere, remains the aim to which we adhere” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Freud, 1914/2017d</xref>, p. 204).</p>
				<p>In 1924, Ferenczi published Perspectives in Psychoanalysis with Otto Rank, where he proposed something different: repetitions in analysis are “the true unconscious material” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Ferenczi, 1924/2011d</xref>, p. 245). Consequently, “in analytic technique, the principal role seems therefore to belong to repetition rather than to recollection” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Ferenczi, 1924/2011d</xref>, p. 246). This does not mean recollection has no place. He clarifies that “this repetition consists … in allowing these affects and then progressively liquidating them, or else in transforming repeated elements into a present memory” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Ferenczi, 1924/2011d</xref>, p. 246). Even so, there is a clear emphasis on the need to “properly appraise the fundamental importance of the compulsion to repeat” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Ferenczi, 1924/2011d</xref>, p. 246).</p>
				<p>At that time, Ferenczi was still experimenting with the active technique - a radicalization of Freud’s principles of frustration and abstinence. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B34">Laplanche and Pontalis (2016</xref>) help clarify these tools: from a technical standpoint, the idea that neurosis finds its condition in Versagung undergirds the rule of abstinence; the analyst should refuse the substitutive satisfactions that could appease the patient’s libidinal demands - the analyst must maintain frustration (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B34">Laplanche &amp; Pontalis, 2016</xref>, p. 204).</p>
				<p>The ideas germinating in Perspectives in Psychoanalysis (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Ferenczi, 1924/2011d</xref>) were soon developed in the opposite direction of the active technique, which he abandoned in subsequent works. In The Elasticity of Psycho-Analytic Technique (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Ferenczi, 1928/2011g</xref>), he writes: “nothing is more harmful in analysis than a teacherly attitude or even that of an authoritarian physician” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Ferenczi, 1928/2011g</xref>, p. 36). In The Principle of Relaxation and Neocatharsis (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Ferenczi, 1930/2011i, p. 65</xref>), he criticizes his earlier “excesses,” noting that they can place “the patient in confrontation with useless and avoidable difficulties; there must be ways of making the patient perceive our kindly benevolent attitude” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Ferenczi, 1930/2011i</xref>, p. 69). The mea culpa continues in Child-Analyses with Adults (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Ferenczi, 1931/2011j</xref>, p. 82): “cold, mute expectation, as well as the analyst’s lack of response, often seemed to disturb the freedom of association.” Ferenczi thus begins to consider affects and attitudes on the analyst’s side as well - countertransference. This leads him to question practices such as attributing therapeutic failures to the analysand’s resistance: “is it not rather our own comfort that scorns adapting the method to the particularities of the person?” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Ferenczi, 1931/2011j</xref>, p. 81).</p>
				<p>Such analyst authority - marked by coldness, silence, disdain, and lack of response, a kind of “professional hypocrisy” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 113) - can have only one consequence: the repetition of the very events that led the patient to the illness he now seeks to treat. As he writes:</p>
				<disp-quote>
					<p>(…) the patient may view the severe and cold reserve of the analyst as a continuation of the infantile struggle against adult authority, and now repeats the character and symptomatic reactions that lay at the basis of his neurosis proper. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Ferenczi, 1930/2011i</xref>, p. 70)</p>
				</disp-quote>
				<p>Yet we have seen that, from 1924 on, Ferenczi valued repetition in analysis. The proposal, of course, was not an identical acting-out of the original pathogenic situation. Rather, it entailed the inevitable re-enactment of “trance states” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Ferenczi, 1930/2011i</xref>, p. 72), in which “fragments of the past were relived, and the person of the physician then formed the only bridge between the patient and reality.” In short, it was a therapeutic repetition that he called neocatharsis - in reference to Freud and Breuer’s cathartic method in the period preceding the creation of psychoanalysis - distinct from that primitive proposal, which he reclassified as paleocatharsis.</p>
				<p>The fundamental difference between the repetition Ferenczi condemns - abandoning the active technique - and the repetition he proposes in the context of neocatharsis lies in the analyst’s stance. If the analyst’s hypocritical attitude engenders repetitions of the situation that originally produced illness, something different must enable reproductions (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Avello &amp; Candioti, 1998</xref>) with curative aims. Ferenczi therefore advocates relaxation - a clinical laisser-faire (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Ferenczi, 1930/2011i</xref>, p. 68) - in direct opposition to rigid principles of frustration and abstinence. Thus, the patient, “impressed by our behavior, which contrasts with the events lived in his own family, and now known to be protected from repetition, will dare to plunge into the reproduction of the unpleasant past” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Ferenczi, 1931/2011j</xref>, p. 85). How is this behavioral contrast achieved? Ferenczi cites “almost unlimited patience, understanding, benevolence, and kindness” (p. 85) on the analyst’s part. He also writes that “the only claim nurtured by analysis is the claim to trust in the candor and sincerity of the physician” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Ferenczi, 1928/2011g</xref>, p. 37). Finally, he defines a key component: tact - “the capacity to ‘feel with’” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Ferenczi, 1928/2011g</xref>, p. 31) - on the part of the person who, after all, occupies the position of authority in the analytic relationship:</p>
				<disp-quote>
					<p>I have become convinced that, above all, it is a matter of psychological tact-knowing when and how to communicate something to the analysand; when one may declare that the material provided is sufficient to draw certain conclusions; in what form each communication should be presented; how to react to an unexpected or disconcerting response from the patient; when to keep silent and await further associations; and when silence becomes a useless torture for the patient, etc. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Ferenczi, 1928/2011g</xref>, p. 31)</p>
				</disp-quote>
				<p>Since <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B26">Freud (1913/2017c</xref>), it is true, the timing of interventions has been a consideration. But Ferenczi is emphasizing something more. For him, the analyst must attune to “the patient’s pitch” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Ferenczi, 1928/2011i</xref>, p. 42), adapting - so far as is possible and desirable in each case - to the singular issues that emerge. The aim is to build an “atmosphere of trust” (Ferenczi, 1932/1985, p. 170) in analysis that will, in fact, stand in contrast to the traumatic past and serve as a medium for the intended cure.</p>
				<p>We may notice that we have said little here about the death drive - our object of study in this article. In Freud’s clinic, the concept is particularly useful as a theoretical representative of diverse clinical phenomena, such as the negative therapeutic reaction (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Freud, 1923/2017f</xref>). More than that, Thanatos is useful because it belongs to the subject and yet is, in a sense, unknown, alien, and beyond that subject’s control. The analyst, observing manifestations of the death drive from a privileged position, must discover, identify, and reveal it to the analysand through interpretation. In Ferenczi’s laisser-faire clinic there are, of course, interpretations; but what is at stake is less the unveiling of a drive conflict narrated through recollections and more the reviviscence of primitive affective states within a welcoming, curative setting.</p>
				<p>The maternal role, to reiterate, becomes decisive in Ferenczi’s thought - at a theoretical level, with the proposal of a universal tendency to return to the womb, and at a technical level, with ideas such as the analyst’s benevolence and tact. Equally important is the notion of repetition - particularly therapeutic reproductions that contrast with the original pathogenic situations. All of this points to yet another crucial horizon: the centrality of the environment, which is capable of producing both suffering and cure.</p>

				<p>In The Unwelcome Child and His Death-Instinct (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Ferenczi, 1929/2011h</xref>, pp. 56-57), Ferenczi examines patients with “unconscious tendencies toward self-destruction,” “suicidal tendencies,” and a broad range of people “almost free of the inhibitions of the will to live,” who lack any “taste for life.” We know that in works such as Civilization and Its Discontents (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">Freud, 1930/2017h</xref>), Freud attributed human destructiveness - against oneself and others - to an innate death drive. Since texts such as The Economic Problem of Masochism (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">Freud, 1924/2017g</xref>), he held that, early in life, Thanatos is expelled from its primordial amalgam with Eros toward the external world, where it manifests as the destructive drive. For <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Ferenczi (1929/2011h</xref>), the lethal element here arises from the fact that these individuals were originally children poorly welcomed by their families:</p>
				<disp-quote>
					<p>I merely wanted to indicate the probability that children received with harshness and without affection die easily and willingly. Or they resort to one of the numerous organic means to disappear quickly, or, if they escape that fate, they will retain a certain pessimism and aversion to life. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Ferenczi, 1929/2011h</xref>, p. 58)</p>
				</disp-quote>
				<p>Ferenczi thus proposes a predominance of the death drive at the beginning of life. He concludes that a strong influence from a positive, welcoming, loving environment is necessary to enable healthy development in this initially unpromising scenario:</p>
				<disp-quote>
					<p>Fascinated by the impressive impetus toward growth at the beginning of life, there was a tendency to think that in newborns the life drives would be largely predominant; in general, one tended to represent the death and life drives as complementary series in which the maximum of life would correspond to the beginning of life and the zero point of the life drive to old age. Things do not seem to be exactly like that, however. In any case, at the beginning of life - both intra- and extra-uterine - the organs and their functions develop with surprising abundance and speed, but only under particularly favorable conditions of protection for the embryo and the child. The child must be led, through a prodigious expenditure of love, tenderness, and care, to forgive the parents for having brought it into the world without asking its intention; otherwise, the destructive drives soon come into action. And, fundamentally, this should not surprise us, since the infant, unlike the adult, is still much closer to the non-being of individuality, from which life experience has not yet separated it. Sliding back into that non-being could therefore occur much more easily in children. The “vital force” that resists life’s difficulties is not, then, very strong at birth; apparently, it is strengthened only after progressive immunization against physical and psychic assaults through tactful treatment and upbringing. In line with the decline in morbidity and mortality in middle age, the life drive could, in maturity, counterbalance tendencies toward self-destruction. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Ferenczi, 1929/2011h</xref>, p. 58)</p>
				</disp-quote>
				<p>A similar idea had already appeared in Stages in the Development of the Sense of Reality (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Ferenczi, 1913/2011c</xref>, p. 60), where a footnote points to “a tendency to inertia or regression, dominating organic life itself,” such that “the tendency toward evolution, toward adaptation, etc. would, on the contrary, depend solely on external stimuli.”</p>
				<p>In The Problem of Affirmation of Unpleasure (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Ferenczi, 1926/2011f</xref>, p. 439), he likewise refers to “primitive organisms” that “are still so close to the point of emergence from the inorganic that their destructive drive has far less distance to travel to return to it and is therefore much more effective.” In the same text, Ferenczi introduces the idea of a “troublesome object” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Ferenczi, 1926/2011f</xref>, p. 436) and its effects in triggering death-laden tendencies:</p>
				<disp-quote>
					<p>The appearance of this obstacle entailed a disentangling of the drives under the crescendo of the aggressive and destructive component; after the satisfaction obtained through revenge, the other drive component, love, also seeks satisfaction. Everything happens as if the two kinds of drives neutralized each other when the ego is in a state of repose - like negative and positive electricity in an inert electrical body - and as if in both cases particular external influences were necessary to separate the two kinds of currents and make them active again. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Ferenczi, 1926/2011f</xref>, pp. 436-437)</p>
				</disp-quote>
				<p>All of this underscores the decisive influence of the environment. It is the environment, after all, that can inhibit early destructive tendencies and allow healthy development. And it is likewise the environment that, by poorly receiving the individual, can promote a drive disentangling that unleashes enduring deathward mechanisms - such as the feeling that life is not “worth living” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Ferenczi, 1929/2011h</xref>, p. 56).</p>
				<p>Let us return now to Ferenczi’s earlier propositions. In The Concept of Introjection (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">Ferenczi, 1912/2011b</xref>, p. 209), he defines introjection as “the extension to the external world of the originally autoerotic interest, by introducing external objects into the sphere of the ego,” as opposed to projection. In that text - and in Transference and Introjection (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">Ferenczi, 1909/2011a</xref>) and Stages in the Development of the Sense of Reality (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Ferenczi, 1913/2011c</xref>) - introjection predominates in the initial period of life, the stage of omnipotence governed by the pleasure principle, while the projective counterpart characterizes a later moment, when a relation to the external world is recognized and developed: the sense of reality.</p>
				<p>We have already emphasized that, for Freud, the death drive arises from within before finding its path outward. Under this view, prohibitions on satisfying the destructive drive toward objects eventually direct Thanatos back inward in the form of the superego, or moral masochism (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">Freud, 1924/2017g</xref>). Freud’s death drive thus emanates from the intrapsychic realm and returns to it.</p>
				<p>Again foregrounding the importance of the environment, Ferenczi offers notions such as introjection of the aggressor<xref ref-type="fn" rid="fn2">2</xref>. This account explains how people exposed to extreme situations of violence and fear may “automatically submit to the aggressor’s will, anticipate his slightest wishes, obey while forgetting themselves, and identify themselves completely with the aggressor” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 117). The bad objects internalized in this way do not integrate well with the ego; they behave like “split-off, foreign transplants” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Ferenczi, 1985 [1932]/1995</xref>, p. 81) that can generate behaviors mirroring those of their source. In other words, the result is “a victim who, identifying with the aggressor, employs the aggressor’s very mechanism” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Avello, 2006</xref>, p. 159). From this Ferenczi derives notions of pathological modes of the superego. In The Clinical Diary (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Ferenczi, 1985 [1932]/1995</xref>) he speaks of a “mad superego” (p. 50) and a “bad superego” (p. 77); another posthumous note mentions an “unassimilated superego” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Dupont, 1998</xref>, p. 78); and <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Avello (2006</xref>, p. 169) discusses a “ferocious superego.” These are, in short, foreign bodies produced by an action coming from outside - not, as Freud would have it, a destructive drive substrate inherent to the subject.</p>

				<title>Trauma</title>
				<p>The aggressions noted above; the situations to be repeated (or reproduced) under analytic relaxation; and the analyst’s stance toward these repetitions - marked by sincerity and tact, in contrast to the original pathogenic scene - lead to a specific concept that occupied a central place in Ferenczi’s late thought and practice: trauma.</p>
				<p>Returning once more to Freud, we see that trauma was largely absent from his work until it resurfaced with his confrontation with dreams in traumatic neuroses in Beyond the Pleasure Principle (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">Freud, 1920/2017e</xref>). At that point, however, the perspective was drive-centered: trauma as a flooding of the psyche by destructive, disorganizing excitations. Little emphasis was placed on the real events from which those excitations may have been released. It was not always so: in the period of the cathartic method - the paleocatharsis to which Ferenczi refers in The Principle of Relaxation and Neocatharsis (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Ferenczi, 1930/2011i</xref>) - the traumatic etiology of neuroses was a pivotal point in Freud’s theory and practice. The shift in perspective is marked by the famous “Letter 69” to Fliess, in which Freud expresses disbelief regarding the trauma reports - especially childhood sexual abuse by the father - he so often heard from his hysterical patients. Emphasis then moves from the original valorization of lived sexual abuses to ideas of fantasy, psychic reality, and the economic aspect of mental functioning (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B34">Laplanche &amp; Pontalis, 2016</xref>).</p>
				<p>Ferenczi’s account of trauma is, of course, quite different. Equipped with the main concepts and technical tools outlined so far, he writes in Confusion of Tongues Between Adults and the Child (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 116):</p>
				<disp-quote>
					<p>(...) It can never be stressed enough how important traumatism is - and sexual traumatism in particular - as a pathogenic factor. Even children from respectable, puritan families are, more often than one would dare think, victims of violence and rape. Sometimes it is the parents themselves who seek, in this pathological way, a substitute for their dissatisfactions; sometimes trusted persons - members of the same family (uncles, aunts, grandparents), tutors, or domestic staff - who abuse the child’s ignorance and innocence. The objection that these are the child’s own fantasies unfortunately loses its force in view of the considerable number of patients in analysis who confess to having had sexual relations with children.</p>
				</disp-quote>
				<p>Ferenczi holds that children and adults inhabit different registers-different “languages”: children in passive object-love, in tenderness; adults in passion. Since Ferenczi himself concedes in the Postscript to Confusion of Tongues Between Adults and the Child that “the problem of the very essence” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 121) of this difference remains open, we draw on other texts to mark the distinction. In <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">The Clinical Diary (1995)</xref> he writes: “Normal life then begins exclusively with passive object-love. Children do not love; they must be loved” (p. 189). Only after this initial moment does a stage of object-love emerge in which one first takes oneself as object before finally investing love in the external world, as Freud proposed. Adults, then, stand in this final stage of object-love.</p>
				<p>Passion involves more than a genealogy of libidinal development. In another diary note, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Ferenczi (1985 [1932]/1995</xref>, p. 151) writes: “Man becomes passionate and implacable purely as a consequence of suffering.” That suffering begins, as we have seen, with the abandonment of the maternal womb - “a period without passion” - and it is updated by events such as “regulation of organ functions, toilet training, weaning,” which “make every human being more or less passionate.” Passion thus also arises from trauma, whose importance in psychic constitution Ferenczi universalizes (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Avello &amp; Candioti, 1998</xref>). Yet, just as psychic configurations vary widely, not all traumas are the same. Here we focus on its pathogenic, disorganizing form.</p>
				<p>Back to Confusion of Tongues Between Adults and the Child (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>). Having established the empirical reality of trauma and discussed the frequency of childhood sexual abuse, Ferenczi describes how such cases typically unfold. Adults who are themselves unwell mistake “children’s games for the wishes of a person who has reached sexual maturity, and allow themselves to be carried away into sexual acts without thinking of the consequences” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 116). They take the child’s demand for love - passive, tender, playful - for fully genital, active, passionate manifestations: this is the confusion of tongues to which the title refers. This is not the only traumatic abuse. He also describes “unbearable punitive measures,” or “passionate punishments” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 119), in which “offenses that the child commits in play” acquire “the character of reality” through punishments imposed by “adults furious, roaring with anger.” Finally, in the “terrorism of suffering” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 120), children “are forced to resolve all manner of family conflicts and bear on their frail shoulders the burden of all the other members.” Roles invert: those who should be cared for become caregivers.</p>
				<p>Ideally, the victim’s immediate response to any such traumatizing action would be alloplastic - “a real defense against harmfulness, i.e., a transformation of the surrounding world so as to remove the cause of disturbance” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Ferenczi, 1934 [1931-1932]/2011l</xref>, pp. 125-126). Yet the “suddenness” of events and the lack of preparedness - born of a prior “feeling of security” and “trust in oneself and in the surrounding world” - may make such action impossible. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Avello (2006</xref>) adds the asymmetry between aggressor and victim as a precondition - part of the “favorable ground” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Avello, 2006</xref>, p. 143) for establishing pathogenic trauma - namely, “a good prior relationship between someone in a position of power … and someone in a position of submission and weakness.”</p>
				<p>In this scenario, shock ensues - a psychic commotion marked by intense anxiety and unpleasure. When alloplastic action is impossible, what remains is an autoplastic solution: “self-destruction which, as a factor that frees from anxiety, will be preferred to mute suffering” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Ferenczi, 1934 [1931-1932]/2011l</xref>, p. 127). One consequence is that “no mnemonic trace will subsist of these impressions, not even in the unconscious, so that the origins of the commotion are inaccessible to memory” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Ferenczi, 1934 [1931-1932]/2011l</xref>, p. 130). Hence the importance of neocatharsis: by “repeating the very traumatism under more favorable conditions” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Ferenczi, 1934 [1931-1932]/2011l</xref>, p. 130), the trauma can be brought “for the first time to perception and motor discharge.” It is also at this traumatic juncture that identification with the aggressor occurs; we have already noted some of its repercussions. The shock also installs the aggressor’s “feeling of guilt” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 117) within the victim.</p>
				<p>Even after these stages of traumatism, not all is lost. The victim - paradigmatically, the child - stunned, tends to seek help from another person. Yet, as Ferenczi notes, “as a rule, relations with a second trusted person - in the example chosen, the mother - are not sufficiently intimate for the child to find help with her” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 117). This is the moment of denial:</p>
				<disp-quote>
					<p>The worst is really the denial - the assertion that nothing happened, that there was no suffering; or even being beaten and scolded when the traumatic paralysis of thought or movement appears. This is, above all, what renders the traumatism pathogenic. One even has the impression that such severe shocks are overcome - without amnesia or neurotic sequelae - if the mother is present, with all her understanding, her tenderness, and, rarer still, complete sincerity. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Ferenczi, 1931/2011j</xref>, p. 91)</p>
				</disp-quote>
				<p>After this last phase of trauma, “narcissistic self-splitting” is established (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Ferenczi, 1949 [1920-1932]/2011m</xref>, p. 290), the most radical mechanism of personality splitting. Part of the subject “regresses to a pre-traumatic beatitude, seeking to make the shock nonexistent” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 119). Another part matures abruptly - like a “worm-eaten fruit” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 119) that “ripens and becomes tasty too quickly when a bird’s beak pierces it” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 120) - or like a “wise baby,” a newborn who “suddenly begins to speak and even to display wisdom to the entire family.” This is “traumatic progression” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Ferenczi, 1933/2011k</xref>, p. 120), through which part of the ego becomes a “guardian angel” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Ferenczi, 1934 [1931-1932]/2011l</xref>, p. 134) to the regressed part - an instance that “looks from outside at the child who suffers or who has been killed (i.e., it slipped out of the person during the process of ‘fragmentation’) and roams the whole world in search of help.”</p>
			</sec>
			<sec sec-type="conclusions">
				<title>Final Considerations</title>
				<p>We have examined the proposal of a return to the womb as an alternative to the notion of a return to the inorganic; noted Ferenczi’s valorization of the compulsion to repeat in analysis within the framework of neocatharsis; explored how a subject’s aggressivity and destructiveness emerge from drive disentanglement and identification with the aggressor; and conceptualized trauma both as a mechanism in the constitution of the psyche and as a pathogenic factor - always through a relational lens. In short, we have outlined Ferenczi’s distinctive treatment of the four axes we identified in Freud’s original formulation of the death drive. Yet Ferenczi also advances ideas that do not fit neatly within this schema, especially in writings never published in his lifetime.</p>
				<p>In a note titled Every adaptation is preceded by an inhibited attempt at integration, he remarks that “instead of ‘death drive’ it would be preferable to choose a word that expresses the complete passivity of the process” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Ferenczi, 1949 [1920-1932]/2011m</xref>, p. 271). In Reflections on the Pleasure of Passivity, On the Male and Female Principles in Nature, and The Three Capital Principles, he discusses egoistic and altruistic drives, aligning the former with life drives and the latter with death drives. He adds: “all this would represent only a slight modification of Freud’s supposition of life and death drives. I would give the same thing other names” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Ferenczi, 1995</xref>, p. 41). In Contribution to the Phallus Cult, he asks: “should the death drive be posited as a drive of goodness and self-sacrifice, something maternal-feminine as opposed to the masculine?” (p. 91).</p>
				<p>More explicit divergences appear in notes such as Fakirism, where we read: “Death drive? Only the individual’s death (damage)” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Ferenczi, 1949 [1920-1932]/2011m</xref>, p. 295). In A Catalogue of the Sins of Psychoanalysis, he states that “the idea of the death drive goes too far and is already tinged with sadism” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Ferenczi, 1985 [1932]/1995</xref>, p. 200). Nowhere, however, is the critique as stark as in a brief undated note - estimated to be from August 1932 - published more than 60 years later by his literary executor, Judith <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Dupont: “Nothing but life drive. Death drive, an error. (Pessimist)” (Dupont, 1998</xref>, p. 82).</p>
				<p>What, then, was Ferenczi’s definitive view of Thanatos? There is no simple answer. “Officially,” he worked with the concept as we have shown; he also conspicuously omitted it from his final construction of trauma in Confusion of Tongues Between Adults and the Child and even in the posthumous Reflections on Trauma (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B32">Herzog &amp; Pacheco-Ferreira, 2015</xref>). “Unofficially,” harsher critiques and reformulations remain fragmentary. Some commentators, such as <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Avello (2006</xref>), suggest setting the death drive aside in Ferenczi’s thought, which was moving toward a new metapsychology distinct from Freud’s. Others, like <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B35">Molin et al. (2019</xref>), prefer to explore his singular perspectives on Thanatos.</p>
				<p>Ferenczi died only months after most of the posthumous notes cited here were written, the victim of pernicious anemia. We will never know in which directions he would have taken these ideas. In what he actually published, he never publicly denied the death drive. Our reading is that, particularly in the final phase of his work - the only period in which the concept could be addressed, given its coinage in 1920 - he increasingly foregrounds the environment, with consequences for his treatment of Thanatos as well. For Ferenczi, the subject’s destructive force is triggered through relation to the other - when the other receives the subject poorly, assaults, abuses, or traumatizes. And this same other is the only agent capable of neutralizing the death drive, whose potential is especially great at the outset of life. Whether within the early family milieu or in the psychoanalytic clinic, the relational field eclipses the purely drive-based account.</p>
				<p>It is, of course, granted that something belongs to the subject beyond environmental influence. Eros is unquestionable for Ferenczi, and we do not share <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Avello’s (2006</xref>) conclusion that there is no death drive in his thought. Our aim has been to show the specific place and meaning the concept assumes vis-à-vis Freud’s original proposal. As environmental influence - i.e., the subject’s relations with those around them - takes center stage in Ferenczi’s theory and clinic, Thanatos, and the drives as a whole, can play no more than a supporting role.</p>
				<p>These conceptions “opened new paths for successors, whose fruitfulness becomes increasingly apparent as research progresses” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Dupont, 1995</xref>, p. 11). Indeed, Michael Balint, D. W. Winnicott, and many others followed the fertile path laid by the thinker who “established the foundations of an object-relations theory, was the first to develop an intersubjective theory of the psyche, and to conceive the analytic situation as a field created between two persons” (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Avello &amp; Candioti, 1998</xref>, p. 281): Sándor Ferenczi.</p>
